Inspired by krnodil...check this out.

serendipity:

1. The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident.
2. The fact or occurrence of such discoveries.
3. An instance of making such a discovery.
4. An aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident.

Let's keep our eyes open, experiment, and really see the what's going on around us for September. No set ups, no grand planing, just go out, or stay at home, and let the unexpected happen around you. Really notice things as they are, soak it all in...be it simple or extraordinary. Share them here.

This is interesting to think about. For the casual hobbyist like myself, without a great understanding of light, my equipment, technique... these happy moments can be fairly common as we learn and shoot. The results might not be striking, but they can be fulfilling personally. For my favorite pro and the much more experienced there seems to be an almost innate ability to find themselves in the presence of a great image. And they possess or have cultivated a reflex to capture an image that becomes striking. Or something like that. I guess that could be called talent.

Either way, the process of discovery is a thrill.

My favorite pro --> John He just happens to be my brother, but we have taken different paths in life. He can see, or feel images around him and capture interesting images daily (at least I think so).
I am not an artist. My re-entry into photography is a happy attempt to enhance the way I look at the world. So for me, serendipity can become epiphany.

Enough of that. This should be fun. T.

This should be a great side challenge to watch!

It would probably be even more fun to participate in, but September is always the busiest month at work. I tried a September side challenge last year and only got about 4 photos in for the whole month, heh.

Can I play? I'm not sure I'll participate all that much. I'm still unpacking and probably will be for a while. But hopefully I'll be able to do at least one or two a week. I'm finding things in my new area that I didn't have where I lived before (like hummingbirds and another odd bird that I have no clue what it is).

Count me in, please.

So we can arrange the shot in the camera, just not set it up?? I think I dig that.

Count me in too!!!

(can I use some layers in this serendipitous image?)

Okay, I'm intrigued. I've been away from DPC for a couple of months and would like to get back in the game. :)

Yep...and absolutely use layers. Heck, I'll probably shoot some film for this month.

would it be okay if I joined too? : )

I'd like to join. Not sure how much I will contribute but it should be fun to watch. Could you post some more examples so I can get a better feel for this one?

Sounds like fun, might be hit and miss, but I would also like to play..

Sounds like fun... I'll give it a go... with any luck, September will be less eventful than August and I'll have more time for side challenges.

I'd like to give this a try. Like others though, not sure how much I'll be able to contribute. But I always enjoy looking at the other images and commenting.

I'll say it FOR RKT, Nick: We'd be so honored and thrilled to have you. Your photos RAWK.

I would like to be a part of this. I failed at keeping up with my own side challenge, though, so my participation may not be as strong as I'd like. I shall try to keep up with viewing and commenting, even if I can't contribute as much in the way of actual photographs.

Absolutely!

Can I play, too? I'm not sure how often or how much I'll contribute, because IMNSHO you can't program serindipty -- it happens by itself, which is what keeps it serindipitous, I guess.

What a fun bunch is forming here.

I've been trying to look at things in a different manner. Hope I'm successful. LOL

I just wanted to add to this...I want the challenge to be about not just a situation, but also about the the realization of a serendipitous photograph. What do I mean by this? I'm talking about experimentation; shooting from the hip, throwing what you see through the viewfinder out of focus, moving your camera as you shoot...you name it. It's about finding the lovely in the unexpected action.

From one of my favorite photographers, Garry Winogrand:

“Photography is about finding out what can happen in the frame. When you put four edges around some facts, you change those facts.”

So yes, serendipity is something that is happened upon, but I also really believe it can be a result of a chance taken while shooting for something else entirely.

Am I making any sort of sense?

colorcarnival asked for an example of serendipity:

I think of this image of mine is an example

I didn't in any way plan to include my husband and son in it - they were lovely accidents (and it's grown to be one of my favourite images)

I took a walk and shot from the hip yesterday evening. I think I've got some good stuff to work with for starters! I'm excited. :)

Can I join in here too please?
