I have a Canon 30D and I am looking for a good range telephoto zoom lens. I go on a lot of nature hikes and what I currently have works well for what I do now but I want more of a range as I just cant sneak up on some of natures creatures w/o chasing it off.

Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

We'd really need to know something about your budget to advise on this...

And of course... how much weight you're willing to carry on these walks...

Sorry, I meant to include my budget. I am looking to spend no more than $1,000.00

As for weight? I would prefer something a bit lighter but I have to carry something heavy and get great shots then it will be worth it. I would like to add I need something that is quick as some of natures animals move quickly and I want to be able to catch them.

Thanks again...

Take a look at the Nikkor 80-200, or 70-200 f/2.8 lenses... both are excellent quality.

If you want something with a little less reach, but still reasonable quality, you could look at Sigma's 50-150 f/2.8 lens (grab a 2x teleconverter for wildlife).

A couple of options, I'm sure someone else will give you more.

***Ooops... someone was tired... forgot that not everyone shoots Nikon... hehe

Thank you, I will take a look. I am not going to rush into my purchase. I want something that will provide me many options and wonderful sharp shots.

Once again I thank you for your advise. I am open for more.

Whilst the 70-200L F4 is a great lens (I have one) it is a bit on the short side for nature photos.

If you have the $1000, I save a bit more and do the 100-400L It is well worth the time and the extra money. the 400 is so much fun with wildlife!!!

(just got one in the end of June and it's truly incredible. I almost went with the 70-200, but I have a cheaper 75-300 and I knew I'd miss the extra 100mm.)

The canon 75 - 300 zoom is a great low priced nature lens. You can find them new for $150. They are light weight and the price is hard to beat. I used one until I got the tamron 28 - 300 stabilized lens.
