How much do you tip a washroom attendant? I find it very annoying to have someone "attend" to me in a washroom. Does anybody like it?

I have a problem with the concept. Does not strike me as the sort of thing that is tipped. Wait staff have tips assumed as part of their income. The person who keeps the restroom clean should be paid their full hourly wage.

i only tip them if i take a stick of gum, or a pack of mints or something. usually between 50 cents and a dollar. for handing me a towel, i typically don't leave anything.

I find it annoying also. I can pick up my own towel, thank you! For free also. Don't remember how much I tipped on the very few times I have run in to a washroom attendent. Probably was $1 US. Don't generally run in that high brow of circles!

Come to the UK - you don't have to tip anybody! The only places a tip is the norm is in a restaurant and ladies hairdressers. At the end of the day people are paid to do their jobs. Just out of interest, other than cleaning, what does a washroom (loo/lavatory/toilet/public convenience, I presume, as opposed to a place you go to get washed) attendant attend to?

Turn on water, squirt soap on hands, hand a towel, offer cologne, mint, mouthwash, and any other thing you can think of. It would be more enjoyable if it were a hot chick, but I suppose there are places like that I just haven't been to.

They usually have a huge spread of fragrances, hair products, etc. that can be used if necessary. (NOT combs, brushes, etc.) I believe they provide these items themselves, not the establishment, so it is out of their pocket.

Myself, I usually bathe in perfume before leaving the house and my hair would be dangerous to smoke around at 200 yards, so no worries!! :P (NOT!)

I know a large part of what they do is make sure all "supplies" are tip top...and any "mess'" are cleaned up right away...I have no problem giving them a buck so long as my stall is "clean"

Well I've learned something new! Always amazes me how very different England is to the States.

Don't forget, they turn the faucets on and off, and also squirt handsoap for you. (And no, that's not a euphemism... at least for the washrooms I've been to...)

Which actually, in a somewhat OCD-way, is more sanitary.

I don't like them, as they always seem to be very chatty -- no matter what you are, umm, "doing" -- and I personally think the washroom is a place for quiet time.

All that being said, I usually drop 'em $1.

I think the survival of our society depends on washroom attendants, for without them the world may come to and end.

[ Score one for recursive thread references -- this will keep someone busy for days... ] ;)

There are some clubs in London that have them. Always makes me nervous! I grab a lollypop and run away

Also I think Planet Hollywood has them.

I've never seen them in the USA. The only time I've seen them is when I've gone to Mexico. Their main job there is to pass out clumps of toilet paper and paper towels, so you are essentially paying to wipe yourself. I suppose guys wouldn't need toilet paper nearly as often as women do, so I think we spend a bit more than you probably. I would usually give them a dollar. One time I was upset and went in the bathroom to cry and wipe my face and the woman came over and handed me a tissue and said comforting words in Spanish. When I was done crying, she held out her hand for money. I gave her $3. FML.

Slightly off topic , a friend of mind was on holiday in the far east (Malaysia I think),anywho he goes to the toilet, unzips and the next moment there is someone massaging his shoulders, he found it very odd and told the man to stop!

As SaraR as mentioned, this is not common in the UK, though a lot of the top clubs etc do have attendants who will provide a squirt of aftershave or 'something for the weekend'.....

The Columbia in Ybor City, FL (Restaurant) has/had them...I think the concept may have come from the time period when women may have needed assistance with their clothing (this should spark some interest...hmmm) going to Google to search...

Try Harrods. When I was driving for my ex-boss, I dropped him off at Harrods and was told to wait. About an hour later I need a pee and went into Harrods and down to the toilets. There was a guy on the door who asked if I was a member? I said no, so he said it was a £1.00 to use the toilets. I told him to whistle for it, went out round the back of Harrods and pee'd in their delivery doorway!!

Ha ha : ) Let's just hope the same guy had to wash the delivery doorway!

I guess I am not 'high class' enough since I have NEVER been in an establishment that had washroom attendents. If I am going to pay someone to help me in the restroom - I would expect them to wipe my butt while they were at it!

Honestly, I think that if I entered a bathroom and found an attendant, I'd leave. I think the idea is strange. But then, I definitely don't travel in circles where I'm likely to encounter this situation...

Just out of interest, why do Americans call a loo/lavatory/toilet/public convenience/WC a 'bathroom' or a 'restroom'?
07/30/2009 06:35:13 PM · #24
Some of us use Lavatory. That is what I was taught as a child, as the polite name. Now people tend towards rest room or bathroom.

Why, well my very proper grandmother (from England) told me that toilet, was impolite and crewd. WC I I've seen in books, never seemed popular here plus too long. Too many sylables. Does not flow off the tongue easily. Loo, I don't know why we didn't go with that. Short, sweet, and sounds cool too. Though we have a bird called the Loon. Maybe too close. Public convenience, is way too long.

Bathroom is popular because we also usually bathe in that room, but not at the same time the other mode is in use.
