Help !!! My Canon 20d has just started showing Err CF when I switch it on. I know it is not the cards as it does this for all 6 that I have and the cards work in my other Canon SLR. It allows me to go into the menu to try and format the card, but as it finishes formatting I get an Err 99 !!! Have tried with other lenses, and I can take photos without the CF card in the camera so guess it is hardware related.

Have had a look at the pins but none of them look bent, not sure what else I can do myself. Think this will require parting with lots money to get fixed :-( If anyone out there has any good suggestions to fix it then let me know.

Thanks

Have you tried removing the battery, wait 10-20 seconds, reinserting then turning the camera back on?

How about removing the CR battery (one that controls the internal clock)? You'll need to reset everything as memory will be erased.

Is there another camera you can try the cards in? Do they work in a card reader connected to the computer?

The first thing to try is removing the battery and reinserting it. I know it sounds weird, but several people with this error fixed it by removing the battery. Kind of a reboot I guess.

Pull the camera battery and reinsert, wait for the little orange light to blink and then pull the CF card and reinsert.

I too find it hard to beleive you have a problem with all 6 CF cards.

Thanks for the replies. I have removed both batteries, checked the little one and that is still giving over 3V ( not bad considering how old the camera is and hasn't been replaced), put the batteries back and still no joy, same Err CF keeps taunting me :-(

Have a nasty feeling this could be an expensive fix or a new second camera, sorry but won't be a Nikon, too many lenses ;-) Having said that, it has served me well for the last 5 years and the shutter count has been round the clock a few times.

Wonder how easy it is to take the camera apart and get to the CF slot to check connections??? Anyone tried that ?

Never dared to tried that. Have you tested the cards outside your camera? Although it's strange you have the same problem with 6 cards. Perhaps a dust blower would help. (Just an idea)

I dont know if anyone is still following this thread but if so, you might be interested to hear that some time ago my 20D showed the same "error CF" warning which turned out to be collapsed connection pins in the base of the CF card slot. This can be seen by looking into the slot.
I dis-assembled the camera very carefully and straightened all the pins but they simply collapsed again when a card was inserted. So I put a 4Gb card into the slot and carefully poked all the pins into the card and reassembled the camera just so it was useable. Its been like that for a couple of years and is used as a second camera to my 5D MkII.

If you are used to taking things to bits to find out how they work, the dis-assembly/re-assembly is not difficult if done with care and I will soon replace the damaged CF Card slot, the part number is CG2-1292-000 000 and costs about £35.00 in the UK. I cant remember the name of the supplier where I got the price from but their UK phone number is 01206 843322.

I hope this information is of some use to someone!!

Regards,
Simon.
