Rules and/or suggestions....

No minimum number of posts but try to keep it to no more than one a day.
No carefully set up set-up shots or studio portraits.
No well-calculated and executed landscapes.

DO enter everyday snapshots of your kids, your pets, your friends, your flower garden, your neighbor drinking beer, your vacation, your trip to the grocery store. Bonus points for stuff shot during the death hours of 10-2 outside, in full sun. DO remember that the lowly snapshot is the birth of modern affordable (more or less) photography for the masses. If it weren't for the lowly snapshot, none of us would have the nifty toys we have today. If you have a point and shoot, get it out and carry it everywhere. Snap away!

Comments? Sure - we all love getting comments. But kindly relax the tendency to correct the technicals in this one. Feel free to react ("reminds me of my Aunt Grace's back yard when we were growing up"). No need to comment on every shot, of course, but do kindly try to at least VIEW every shot. Snapshots really do like getting a little attention, you know.

Any takers?

I do this anyway ... ;-)

This might be a good venue for camera-phone shots too -- that semms about as point-and-shoot as you can get.

Great idea. Here I come!

If I may indulge in some blatant self-promotion, may I direct readers to the Ansel Adams quote I have on my profile page. Posted in response to the flak I got for entering "Anonymous" in The Famous Photographer Challenge.

This will be fun - a reaction challenge! I like it. I'm in :)

Germaine, that entry of yours still stands out in my mind as one of the best finds in a challenge to date for me. To those of you who haven't seen it:

And the quote from Mr. Adams is perfect! And yeah, cell phone cameras are good too!

What an irresistably presented proposal. (May have to continue the postponing of the taking of the "well calculated and executed landscape" for yet another month!).

Just wondering if it would be ok to use some snaps I took on a very rare trip off island last week? Generally I like to stick to the time window, but I have been feeling a little stuck in my small paradise.

Yes, off-August snaps are welcome. I may throw in a few of my cats, as I've been playing with the new toy with them as my subjects, and have a few that are amusing. Well, at least to me they're amusing...

P.S. Paul, don't know if your response indicated you'd play along or not, but I put you on the list anyway. :-)

Your participation requirements seem lax enough that I should be able to post some pictures ... I usually have the biggest problem keeping up with the commenting.

I'm glad we can include ones not taken in August. I took one last night that was hilarious and i'm seeking an audience for it. :) I suck at keeping up with the commenting but I shall try my best.

Oh me! Just up my alley!

Great idea! Would it be a problem if I join only the second half of the month? I'm not expecting to have internet access the first half.

The hours of 10-2 are usually the times I shoot!! I'll join in, should be fun.

I think I can do it...I will have to up my standards to do a snapshot challenge, I'm going to persevere.

LOL, Steve! :-) And hajeka, join in when you can. Karen, Kelli - welcome aboard!

Can I come out and play, too???
07/26/2009 04:59:49 PM · #16
Can I still post even though I don't own a point and shoot? I do plenty of snapshots, heck some people say that is all I do. LOL

Those people are nuts!......8>)

I don't own a P&S either, but I *DO* take my camera everywhere and always shoot something virtually every day.

Is that okay?

Just slip it into Auto or Program mode, and save as JPEG (or use the JPEG from that plus RAW) and it seems well within the spirit of the challenge to me.

Yep, non P&S's are welcome, and GeneralE's suggestions make good sense. If you normally shoot RAW, set it to RAW plus small jpeg if that's an option for you. Saves a whole lot of editing for something like this side challenge. Remember, this is just for fun - kind of an exercise in just enjoying having a camera.

So.....what you want me to do is straight from the camera stuff.....what you sees is whats you gets???

I'm not the best snapshotter in the world so i guess i gonna skip that one, but it reminded me on a very cool "store" (it was more like an exhibition) I accidently found on my last trip to Weimar. They had just opened it the same day, so i had the chance to chat a bit with the owners to find out more about their concept. So the idea is, they buy up old random snap-shot-ish kinda photos from familiy albums on the internet or from household auctions and collect and sort them into categories and present them in cool little photo projectors and other artsy stuff. It was so much fun raking around in their archives and laughing about ridiculous 60's spectacle designs or 70 years old faded b&w photos from a wedding ceremony.
They have a website with some funny stuff, so if you're interested and know some german you should go check it out: //vergessene-fotos.de/

You can edit the crap out of your snapshots if you so desire - no editing rules here. I'd suggest you minimize cropping - chances are you'll change the whole feel of the snapshot if you get too carried away with cropping. Slight tilts are good. Clutter is good.

GREAT link, Christoph - thanks!!

Can't guarantee I'll submit many snapshots Deb but will submit a few unedited out of the cam shots during August.
07/26/2009 06:02:10 PM · #24
Toss my name in the hat. This sounds easy to keep up with and I can throw in some goofball shots of the kids.

I might do a few phone-cam shots.
