any advice on setting it up, like CPM vs CPC? stuff like that? i need a little dpc advice before i do anything about anything it seems:)

A podcast I was recently listening to had mentioned this specifically, and said that its kind of a bunk advertising method, since facebook/myspace have so many junk ads up there (click here to win your free ipod or guess britneys last name and win a macbook) that people are so accustomed to ignoring ads, that they often go unoticed.

The speaker said he did a weeks worth on there, and while he got a few hits, it didnt' generate any new business that he could tell.

And to be honest, if they are already your clients, unless this photog is much better, and even then, unless yu didn't offer a great experience, youre messing up if they go to a new photog.

I completely agree there, most ads that I see on most websites I consider junk and don't even give them a second glance, and that is especially true for Facebook.

I haven't created an ad, but I did make a page with my images. Friends &/or clients can become fans of your work. For myself I only did it to get my name out there a little more & so friends & family on facebook could view some of my work.

On another note, I got this from a friend:

Facebook is now able to use your name and photos in auto-generated ads to people on your friends list. You can opt out by following these steps: Log in to Facebook, and then go to Settings>Privacy Settings>News Feed and Wall>Facebook Ads (tab near top of page)>Set “Appearance in Facebook Ads” to “NO ONE”> click “Save Changes.” Voila, you’ve now opted out.

True or Legend?

Trueish. They'll put your name and photo and some "social action," such as "mk is a fan of Punch Pizza" above an add for something else. Supposedly the social actions are relevant to the ad but...not so much. But they don't make the ad look like it's yours or anything.

LadyK, you'd probably be better of posting in a group for the local high schools or getting a few sessions with seniors (freebies if you have to) and then post them on your facebook and tag the seniors so that all their friends can see them. Tada, free marketing.

Maybe, and this is just a thought, you could offer 2 or 3 free sittings as long as they post your pictures for there friends to see. If your work is good enough and they have a good experience with you the word of mouth will spread like wildfire. Kids in high school have hundreds of friends on there contact lists so they will get exposure. Just a thought.

You could always do a Facebook ad and end up on Art's wall of shame of ads on facebook. If you aren't friends with him, you should check out some of them.

Because your target is so small go cpc.
Cost per impression would just be throwing away money.

I have done a lot of advertising with Facebook and with CPM and I am able to keep my world wide price at about $0.17 per click but that's because my market is general.

Also look to see if the visa small business network application is still giving away a free $100 coupon code if you sign up for their application on face book. Its just a group of business owners who discuss well... business.

At one point I was able to get up to $500 in free coupons but those days are over :(
