LMAO ! every one kills me with this DEAD CENTER stuff LMAO
Details: A centered subject can be very arresting and dominate the composition. Take a picture where the main subject is dead center.
the way i see it there is only one photo that fits this LMAO the DEAD man in the center !!! (J/K)
oh and i maybe wrong but when i read this the first time i figured that it wanted more than one object in the shot so that the center object would over power the whole photo
anyways good luck everyone
even the people going crosseyed checking for DEAD CENTER

Its only a Blue Ribbon. Not a grand Prize Jackpot. LOL
My photo is only doing 5.05. As far as I am concerned, the photo is excellent. And I am not just saying that because it is mine. It just is. Color is great, and my main subject is DEAD CENTER. But you have to remember that alot of people have different "eyes" and different "ideas".
Not everyone will look at a great photograph in a magazine or book and agree they like it. Some will turn the page, and some will get stuck on it, and love the photo. It is all about perception.
As far as the guidelines for the challenge... I have to agree with Pedro.
My subject is dead center... and I did go crazy and actually measure my crop, but still... people will have their eyes play tricks on them and tell you its not center.
I think people should lighten up, just like Jenesis states. |

I've taken a break from challenges for a couple of months and now I remember why... I guess I was just burned out on working so hard on pictures to have them score mediocre.
I wish it was more about creativity, beauty and open mindedness and less about being a stickler for the "challenge description" .... "Dead center" give me a Break!!!

My Opposites photo have 6 out of 24 comments stating that doesn't meet the challenge in their opinion! I respect that.
But, common thing about these folks is:
a: They have none favorite photographers
b: They have none favorite photos
c: Or both
I guess this guys are the best photographers on the world and I failed to satisfy them :-) |

I agree with you jenesis.
I just like sharing my photos here on this site. Dont care about score.
I have won a couple of contests in the past where i got a camera each time, and those were judged by a panel of judges. Thats where it matters to me.
Also remember.... people that are voting are the same people that are competing.
Now if a panel of judges were voting that had no special interest or photographs involved, then voting would be more fair. |

I'm eyeballing the shots and if the main subject of interestt, i.e., focus, is somewhere in the middle of the frame (including all sides, not just horizontally or vertically) I'll accept that as meeting the challenge. I took 'dead center' as what the folks who made up the challenge had in mind which is why I'm not considering a shot where the subject is only centred in one direction. Otherwise, I'm not being to persnickity about measurements. I trust my eyes to judge where 'dead center' is.

Sometimes I think that voters take all the fun out of entering these challenges, cause you feel like you have turned in a good pic and have used a bit of creativity then when the challenge starts I see 30 pics of flowers...but hey they are dead center so I guess they'll win and shaft the people who try and put variety into these competions everytime, because they are a few centimeters off or don't meet the challenge by some miniscule reason, I turned off my ability to see my score, I have not looked at it the entire time, I don't know what my score is...I'll judge what I think it is with the comments I recieve, and so far I have one that likes it because it is different and one that doesn't because it is not completly centered, to my eye it was, didn't get a ruler out...guess I should have.

On the other hand, mine is completely centered (in camera and tweaked in cropping) (and not flowers although my first consideration was a beautiful orchid) but was accused of crop centering my subject and got penalized for that just the same.
So whether you follow the challenge parameter literally or not, you can't satisfy everyone. Some critiques could always find fault :-). So just submit what you think is best and enjoy viewing others' works.

Yes, but I've been on this site just long enough to know that creativity doesn't go unpunished. ;)
I did something "different" for Opposites. No one else did this. It's in focus. It follows the rule of thirds and has nice lines leading into the composition. It meets the challenge, blatently, but not in the way you would first expect. From spot checking scores, I have at least 25 people scoring it 3 or below. I have about 10 people scoring it 8 or above. It's sitting about 4.89 now.
My abstract shot involved movement of the camera to produce an abstract effect. Several people thought it would ribbon. It got 19 people to score it 3 and below. It has 21 fours on top of that. It had 27 8 and above socres allowing it to finish with a 5.682 for a "just ok" 57th place and 73rd percentile.
My something new shot was a straight shot of two bridges. It's aethetically nice, but compared to these other shots, it's much more "conservative". My something new shot got 4 scores under 3, and only 18 fours, so it finshed ok in the 82 percentile and 34th place.
Of course, this is where I am going with this. If you submit conservative and competent shots, you are rewarded. You get fewer 1s, 2s, and 3s, which drag your score down, and your placement.
I'm not complaining at all, and I'm not bitter about anything. I personally think it's something you just "realize" about the site. I'm not even saying this should change the way you shoot--it will just affect your score!
I'm curious how many people agree?
EXCEPTION TO THE RULE: If you freeze motion, especially drops, and you catch it well technically, you will do well no matter what the challenge.

I really agree with this point. Personally, I did not use a ruler or math to calculate the dead center spot of my image, but I placed my image in the center to the best I could (with my eye and lens), and took the picture. It's probably not perfect, but it's surely not "off center". I took the dead center aspect to mean that the photo should be put in the center (top, bottom, left, right... all equal margins as best as possible)... just not off center in anyway.
Everyone interprets these differently. I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in. :) |

Hee hee. Here is the shot I rejected for entry. I'm not nuts about what I entered. I like it but I was never quite satisfied with it as an entry. I couldn't find anything else I liked better. My score has been hanging in at 4.75 with one comment that it looked a little out-of-focus. It's not as sharp as I would like either but I wouldn't say out of focus. I think the problem has a lot to do with my old camera. I definitely feel handicapped by that. My camera was great for a consumer line camera in its day but it is way outmoded these days at a little higher than 1 megapixel. I remember when I bought it a lot of consumer cameras were not in the megapixel range. :D
