Terminal. It was sounding a little off when the shutter closed (sounded find when it opened), but it would only last for a couple of pictures. now when I take the shot, the shutter opens and never closes again. Took the battery out and put it back in and it closed. Checked the settings to see if I had done anything stupid like putting it on bulb. Nope. f5.6 1/250th of a second. Tried taking the picture again. It was a hell of a long 1/250th of a second. I had to pull the battery again.

If it wasn't for the fact that my husband just got me a 100-400L lens, I might have gotten away with that! Now, at this point, I'm worried about how much it will cost to fix... (because of the fact that I just got a 100-400L. sigh)

I feel so bad--I loved my camera! Does anyone know how expensive it is to get a Canon camera fixed?

Sounds like a new shutter is in order. I think that repair runs about $200 from Canon, but I'm not positive.

Oh that would be better than I expected. Someone had thought it takes $300 to get them to even look at it. My pop-up flash never has worked properly (it gets stuck). I'm also going to have that fixed, but I can't think that would run too much...

I bought a used 40D with that problem once and figured out a simple fix. I noticed that a little upward pressure on the flash made the release button work again, so I just stuck a couple of strips of black electrical tape under the flash to keep it pressed up slightly against the latch. Problem solved.

Ya, I second that it sounds like a new shutter would fix the problem. Canon will look at it for free. They will email you with the repair needed and the cost. If you don't want it done they send it back.

I would just give a slight lift when pressing the button, and it would pop-up. But since I was sending it in, I figured it might be better to fix it than to keep playing with it. It sounds like they'll send me an estimate. Hopefully they'll break it down. If it's pricey for the flash fix, I won't bother.

How many actuations, Wendy? The 40D is rated for quite a few. I just rolled mine over recently.

Before ya send it in, perform a master reset on the camera.
It does sound like the shutter and like others have told you that's probably not gonna break the bank for repair.
I don't know about the 40D but my D200 has a mode where one press opens the shutter, and another will close it... but if wait a period of time it will close itself. Usually used in the mirror up, macro mode. If your 40D has this mode, and somehow you accidentally entered the mode, it might look like a bad shutter. How many clicks do you have on the 40D? Less than 10,000 I'd think it shouldn't be the shutter.

Yep, that's it! Try the electrical tape. A small rectangle of one or two layers of tape under the flash will solve it.

At 40,000 I'd suspect the shutter. The "master reset" fix is something you should do try any camera you are sending in for a manufacturer or dealer fix. These dern cameras are so complicated now that you can get them into the darnest states just playing with the menu. Good luck, hope it's a cheap fix and your pop-up works again!

hahah! Not bloody likely!! I have a 20D that I really don't like. The 100-400L will go on the 20D until I get my 40 back. (I REALLY didn't like the 20D--the focus seemed soft. I even sent it back in while it was still under warranty. I don't think they did anything. I actually was supposed to sell the 20D to help pay for the 40D, but somehow it never happened. I'm glad of that, because I'd really hate to be without a camera. But I'm not looking forward to using it. I liked the rebel that I had prior to the 20D better than the 20D.
