Anyone else miss them?

... and if we turn them back on, can we behave like adults? ;)

I want them back too... i have started signing my comments...

I never had them to begin with, but I have been appreciating those who sign (though I don't myself, mostly from laziness). So I guess that's a yes.

I have no shame having my name associated with my comments, and its going to be exposed later anyway, so why not own up to your comment. It makes for a long week waiting for the challenge to end so having the names of the commenter, makes for something else to do, like look at their submissions and answer any questions they may have asked.

a really neat feature to go along with this would be the ability to anonymously respond to a comment. with the current PM function, the receiver of that message knows who you are. It would be neat to have an AR (anonymous response) function on the comments page that sets up an email to the commenter with the photo title as the subject line.. this would allow the commenter and the photographer to interact anonymously regarding photo issues....

just a thought........

That's a great idea, jm!

I would be happy with seeing the names, too. It would be nice to be able to respond to questions asked...

I asked for this before but it wouldn't hurt to ask again. Can we have it set up where if we leave a comment that shows our name then the vote gets locked in so the owner of the photo can't influence us to change the vote after talking with them? Influencing a vote is the only problem I see with having our names automatically appear with our comments.

I think that's a very good idea, though it'll require some extra coding. I'll talk to Langdon about it :)

I wouldn't want my vote locked.. i often change my votes after the initial vote is cast...

But you could refrain from commenting until you were sure about your vote. Only then would it get locked. I think this is a pretty good idea.

i guess that could work but i would have to rethink the way i cast my votes :(

me too, me too!! Oooops, I have been hanging out with my little nephew all day! I am all for the return of the comment names. I have taken jmsetzler's cue (this challenge!) of leaving my name because while I may not (obviously) know that much about photography, I know what I like, and it interests me to hear the photographer's feedback...if they are so inclined--and it is hard to keep up a full week later. The score changing issue was addressed a couple of months ago and I still feel the same way--Just don't change it! I occasionally change my votes based on my own opinion--and even when the names were posted beside the comments--I didn't change my votes just because the photographer said so! That said, I think it is a great idea Drew, and I am all for bringing it back. While you are at it--let's find Mousie, too...!:)

about the comments ... i think that when we - the photographers add the details ... they should be seen while voting ... then .. maybe people wouldnt ask as many questions on to understand why you submitted what you did .. the explaination (if you think there need be) would be there as you are looking at the image to vote on ... thats what i always thought that the details section was for .. kinda like a caption .... to explain the photo a little more ... i know it would sure help my photo this week with city life ...
06/26/2002 11:06:12 PM · #14
I still think a photo should stand on it's own without an explanation until after the voting is over. I often like to give details that would give away who I am or at least narrow it down to a handful of us in the Seattle area. Maybe you could just have super long title like 'Thisisn'tfakeditmeetsthechallengesobuggeroff' :? )

Yes, this is why details are left off -- the photo should be able to stand on its own. And by the same token, comments should not influence voting -- which is the main reason names were taken off the during-voting comments page in the first place.

We have means in place to add an administrator note to a photo if there is question about its authenticity and we've proved that it is authentic. We may be adding a 'request an admin note' field to the submission page, but if/when it comes around, we certainly won't guarantee that we'll get to it before the challenge starts.

I agree that I would like to be able to resopond to questions whether there are names attatched or not. There are some questions sitting in my comments now that I would like to answer, but can't now. By the time the challenge is over, it will be old news.

LOL! Good stuff, timj351. This title would especially apply to my photo this week and there is nothing I can do! I should have just left off the title ''cause people think it should be more because of it. Sheesh.;)

I''m not sure if this should go here or in its own thread, but what do people think of the idea of being able to ignore comments on your photo from selected users? jmsetzler and I discussed this a bit in the racial slurs thread. I felt as though it might not work because people might then overreact and ignore comments from people they simply disagree with, who aren''t offensive... but really, if they do that and miss out on constructive comments that''s up to them, in the end. Maybe it actually would be a good idea to give people that power and make them feel that they can avoid the offensive/troll commenters without leaving, or arguing endlessly in the forums, and just relax and have a good time.

If that was going to happen, you''d probably have to show people''s names all week, otherwise they''d have to keep seeing the offensive comments every day until the results were out.

(By "ignore" I mean gag, or silence, or something... in case there is any confusion. Comments by users who were gagged wouldn''t be displayed.)

I'm all for having names on comments, wouldn't like the vote to be locked (since we're adults) and think showing the aperture and shutter data with the image would be a big help without detracting from the image's ability to stand on its own. You owe me 2¢.

I'm guessing that having the "request administrator note" means we can have you say Thisisn'tfakeditmeetsthechallengesobuggeroff'? But seriously, I have no problem at all with having the names turned back on. As for acting like adults, I hope so. The lock in vote feature isn't something I would want. I sometimes change my votes during the week after I have looked closer at each individual photo.

If I'm not mistaken, "putting in" one's 2¢ would mean paying us the money. We'll accept check or money order or paypal ;) donations@dpchallenge.com

At the time, I thought removing the names was a good thing, but I have to admit that I do miss them too. Therefor I'd like to see them turned back on again.
Although influencing is an issue, I'm not sure I like the vote-locking idea. Like others, I often change my votes during the week after giving the photos a second look too. The only way to avoid vote-locking would be to give only comments at the end of the week. I'm afraid this might result in less comments, plus most comments being given at the end of the week. I certainly wouldn't like that.

BTW: I support Jmsetzlers suggestion to add "anonymous response".

Anonymity is awfully dangerous ... I cast my vote against it.

I agree anonymity can be dangerous, but with jmseztlers system it's not totally anonymous because the title of the photo will be used as fixed subejct for the email. The sender will be known once the results are published.
