... I'm following advice in other threads to try to recover the images
But if I'm succesful (or if not) what do i do with the card - bin it ? reformat it and carry on using it ? use it only for less important stuff
Wisdom of crowds appreciated here |

I'd return it to its maker and demand a new one. |

It's not that new - but its a 4 gig card, adata, and Id rather not chuck it if formatting is likley to redeem it.
Ive tried demo software so now its just a case of finding a programme i can afford to buy |

I keep stuff like that around as photo props. I just went through this with a 2GB DS card -- I might keep it (reformatted) in my camera bag for true "emergencies" when my other cards fill or fail, but I won't use it regularly ...

| I had a not so new Kingston card that died. They replaced it for free. It's worth checking into. |

I'd follow chaimelle's advice and I wouldn't want to use it for anything except for absolute emergencies. 4 GB of pictures would be a lot of shots to lose no matter what you are using for a camera.

Depending which card you have it may be guaranteed.
From adata's site;
Flash Card:
SD/ CF/ MMC/ mini SD/ MMC Plus: these memory cards bought from 2005/7/1 and are covered by a life-time warranty.
Note:10 year warranty in France, Germany and Austria.
XD/ MS/ SM: These memory cards are covered by a two-year warranty.

| Over the years I have had cards, hard drives, etc. "go bad". It really does sux. 1st I would check for any warranty. What I have done was reformatted them and carried on. Normally it is just a sector or 2 that has gone bad....You will never get the full amount of memory but normally it is still useable.... |

i would keep....but be careful.
One day..I wasn't paying attention. and stuck in the failed (identical to the new one) card in...and ruined a lot of good family pics. So...after that day..I threw the bastard away. But, a simple small mark could have stopped that problem before it even happened.

tangentially related -- i was having difficulty reading a card, so i bought a new reader only to have the same problems. thus, i'm assuming it is the card.
i did the format thing tonight, but if it still has problems, am i in the same boat? chuck it? beg the company for another one. i've had it since october or november, but it is a 16gb, so it would be a buttload of pictures to lose if it were full. :( |

If you have only had it since october or november I'd def call the company. This isn't one of the Kingston 16GB we all got the good deal on is it? I've got one of them in my 1DsMKII.

I use bad ones for file xfers to 1-hour labs. Until they die all the way.
I also format every card after I download and back up the images. So all of my cards get (camera) formatted every time they are used.

I get a little CD with all the CF Cards I buy, its recoverery software for the Sandisk cards I buy but not sure if it works with other cards.. want me to send you a CD? I have 3 or 4 laying so wont miss it.. Does anyone know if it works with other cards? Never had to use it myself .... yet! |

I reformat every time I unload the card. One of the guys in mt camera club suggested I do that. I've had considerably less problems since.
I think it depends on the card, too. Some cards I've had are just flaky.
I throw the flaky ones out. It's just not worth it to me to chance losing good images.

nah, there's never any dead subjects on dpc. just old, moldy ones. :) |

| running recovery software on said card now. you'd think i'd have enough sense not to use it, but i formatted it to see if it would help. obviously, it didn't. >:( |
