Down to a 5.96 now, but when the low votes are mostly 5's, that is doing well.

"A little too noisy for me, but I like the basic concept.....5"

It's not noise, it's grain LOL.

Apparently, this commenter did not feel it enhanced the image.

I've got about 55 votes, vacillating between 5.4 and 5.6, so I'm not complaining.

How would you go about determining the difference between noise & grain?

Noise is digital grain. I guess the difference would be a subjective one: Does it enhance the image or hurt it?

Well, that's where I differentiate......if the idea is to add a texture, or meld a texture into a part of the image, then I'd consider it grain; if it looks like pixels, RGB, then to me it's added noise.

Does that sound reasonable?

When I can specifically can see pronounced different color pixels, I'd consider that noise.

Thoughts?

Yes, that is Chrominance noise, but there is also Luminance noise, which is the graininess of the same color, such as what you often see in the sky on many images. Luminance noise looks more like film grain.

To me it is still a subjective thing, regardless of how it was achieved or what you call it.

i would have to agree jeb but what would be the difference in that if say the photo was b/w insead of color would that still apply?

Well.....I've noticed that in CS2, if I go into filters, and add noise, even to a B&W image, I have to desaturate it to get rid of the color pixels.

Here's what I see as being a difference.....three images, first the base image, second only with Gaussian noise added, third with what I'd do to make grain.

With the third one, I didn't get the coloration, and the effect seems more embedded then applied on top the way the noise is.

I'm really curious as to how my Image Grain II shot got so wonderfully grainy.....I did shoot it at 1600, but I also think that the crumbling concrete was the biggest help.....8>)

Still not viewed all the submissions but many look as if they would be better images without the addition of grain.

What a weird day of voting, 5 votes averaging 8.8! and one was a 5 so methinks I've had a few bumps :)
