I'm trying to help a friend out (you know, when you're the only guy in the office with photos he took, and can speek camera geek... must be the expert).

Subject camera is a Nikon L18. She says she has been getting a grey band across the bottom of the image on about 15% of shots lately. We've changed the battery, and the camera appears to operate normally.

Blur added to make parents happy if found on web. The rest of the picture looked fine before PSE6.

Any ideas?

that happened once to me, kinda, except it was my memory card, i believe. if i tried to delete a picture in camera, it would do something funky like this, or combine the top of one picture with the bottom of another. reformatting the card would fix it, but i don't know if it would "transfer" to the computer messed up or not (don't remember)

Well, I hope you blurred the image....if not, the grey bottom is not that big of an issue, the buluring is just as big of an issue! ;) J/k

Another vote for memory card.

Yeah, some sort of file corruption on the card. I have the same result on some of the files I just "recovered" off a crashed card using recovery software ...

Bad Card.....

I have the same thing happen - except it's not the cards because they're fine for other people... It's the reader on my two-year-old computer! I've found that I can avoid the banding if I drag and drop the entire DCIM folder instead of trying to open the folder and drop the individual images. Means I have to take the additional step of renaming folders once they're on my hard drive, but it also means I don't have to repair the computer for a little while longer.

Thanks all! I suspected a memory card, but wanted to see what the group think was before I suggested she change it out.

I would say this is the memory card problem. I had the samet hing happen. I bought a new memory card and threw the old one away. problem fixed.

I'd say bad card but I have also seen it on my old website. (Bad hard drive in that case). In any event the banding is likely due to corruption of the file
