Think of all the sweet material posessions us sinners will get! I'm going to be scrounging around in the houses of pious photogs right off.

Hey, I've got a fellow sinner friend up in Seattle. I could visit him at the same time. Roadtrip, anybody?

Pre, Mid, or Post?

Apparently, I'm a Amillennialism or mid.

What ever you believe, when fit hits the shan, you better be right with God.

And for $14.95/year, you can let your friends you've been raptured.

No thanks, I prefer pillaging only those with modern photo equipment.

Seems if only 144,000 get to go, rapture probably already occurred and we never even noticed.

When we have German holidays here that don't coincide with American holidays, we go to work. My coworker mentioned on her way in on one of those mornings, it seemed as though rapture had occurred and we were left behind. Literally no one is out on the mornings of German holidays... it is indeed quite eerie!

When it happens, you can have all my stuff, I won't need it anymore.

I've wondered that myself. Also that it happend sometime around the turn of the century and the Bush/Cheney administration was the 7 years of evil rule, and no one really noticed that either. ;-)

Agreed. But it's funny to watch the supermarket tabloids get the believers in a frenzy over it every few months.

And in the words of Jimmy Buffett: "Who cares about the rapture when there's native girls to capture? There's a party at the end of the world!"

I believe the rapture is the only possible explanation of American fiscal policy, If your going to blow town at the end of the week, why not run up your bar tab?

Early Christians, or the various sects that would coalesce into Christians, were operating in crazy times. The Jews were under a lot of pressure from Rome. Paul is writing right before the fall of Jerusalem, while the Gospel authors are writing afterward. There was a feeling of the world coming to an end, so there is a lot of talk in the New Testament of how Jesus is going to come back, sometimes they were even so bold to say "in this generation."

Well, it didn't happen. Some Christians can shrug and say it was just a sign of the times, but other Christians can't read the New Testament as anything but a prediction of the Second Coming. Because their belief depends on everything in the Bible being literally true, they make an elaborate interpretation of the book of Revelations, which thus becomes a sort of Apologia for the over-eager doomsayers who came before it, even though it was more likely a screed against Rome. Ironically, this involves literalists doint all sorts of arcane symbolic interpretations.

Finally, because of conflicting accounts in the Bible, and because of theological questions about resurrection of the body vs. resurrection of the soul, we get this odd timeline of Christians leaving (Rapture), then a bunch of stuff happening, then Jesus coming down, presumably with all the Christians(?), then ruling for a thousand years, la dee da. This is what happens when you try to force something that doesn't fit. It either breaks or gets warped.

the scary thing is, people actually belive that. Especially when it comes to environmental issues.

the funny thing is, the word "rapture" never appears in the bible. Also, there is no biblical reference for the "7 year tribulation".

Darn sola scriptura, not in your bible

Rapture
Latin: rapiemur from Latin Vulgate of 1 Thess. 4:17
"we will be caught up"

Of course, there are many things not in the bible that Christians follow.

Eschatology, the study of the end-times, is a branch I usually have little patience for. Since Jesus signalled he would come "like a thief in the night" I've found little use in trying to drill through the imagery of Revelation.

On the other hand, I will relate a simple story. In undergrad I had a dream that the rapture occurred. For some reason I was "caught up" and flying over the golden gate bridge (very pretty) toward a returning Jesus while seeing one of my friends at the time standing on a grassy hill. The combined bittersweet emotion of realizing the culmination of my faith and knowing my friend was not part of it was so strong I can still recall it clearly to this day (it was one of those dreams you swear is real while events are transpiring).

Regardless of whether people view the whole thing as real or malarkey, the hope of restoration, that things will one day be "put right", is a powerful boon to those who view the world through such a lens.

Doc thats a beautiful story, and it speaks to the depth of your faith.

Sadly, I hear a lot of people talking about the Rapture like its a "get out of jail free" card, releasing us of our obligations to be the steward over the lands and the animals that was laid on us long, long ago.

Unfortunately, there are too many self-righteous people that entertain a kind of cleansing attitude about the whole thing with anyone who doesn't believe their way "getting what they deserve".

A pretty sad, elitist kind of perspective, IMNSHO.

That's a great point. On one hand I consider myself to be pretty far out there on the "branch of environmentalism". I have always loved nature and it pains me to see us destroy it. On the other hand, I realize at times that, hey, my faith says it's going down this way so why should I be so surprised that it's actually happening.

In the meantime I'll be trying to bring as many extra-limbed frogs along for the ride as possible...

What purpose does the destruction of the earth serve?

It seems so wrong to rid the planet of its biggest scourge, then destroy it.
