I recognize the photo from here - perhaps we can find the owner and alert him.

It's in a thread on fred miranda //www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/785624

the link isn't to here though //lh3.ggpht.com/_hVOW2U7K4-M/SYvJiAqDGVI/AAAAAAAA5aM/wLF-NT2j5Tg/s640/024_pics.jpg //lh3.ggpht.com/_hVOW2U7K4-M/SYvJiAqDGVI/AAAAAAAA5aM/wLF-NT2j5Tg/s640/024_pics.jpg

Is it DrAchoo? I remember seeing this when it was first posted.

From the poster's words:

The blog posting tried to give credit. Under the image in question it links back to //photo.net/ - not to any specific image or profile or photographer.

So Sam Hassas may not be stealing images, just blog posts then? Still not acceptable IMO.

Sam is a very well respected member of the FM community and wedding forum. You should know that I've seen you there quite a bit. Sam is just having some fun reposting the photos rather then linking to the page they are on.

Yes, it's Dr. Achoo's pic from the "Portrait of a camera" challenge. It's been making it's way around, but he's said he is ok with it.

Here's the other thread on it. I still think he should send DarkRoastedBlend his credit info (or maybe he has).

eta; Um, Faidoi, please tell me you edited your post after I posted, despite what the timestamp says. I'm not THAT senile to miss that, am I??

Well, it's not that I care about you, it's just to save multiple threads on the subject.

Of course I care about you! ;)

Well son of a gun...who knew?

ERROR: 'Wildlife as Canon Sees It' is already in your favorites list.

And when that is done here the poster that does it is called on teh carpet and reamed up the butt. Either it's OK to do it or it's not.

If someone reposted a blog entry of mine without ANY attribution I'd be pissed as hell. The blogger did the work and sam used it without permission or credit.

I think that's wrong. Apparently you do not.

Fate. You are ridiculous. Did you just accuse hassas of taking credit for the images? Are you
unable to see the humorous tone in his post? wow.

Perhaps you could have brought this up with the OP on the other site a little more privately and discovered the context and details behind it?

Just a thought.

Let's put this in perspective shall we? Nobody is STEALING it. It isn't being claimed as anyone's, money is not being made off of it, nor is it being given to others to use commercially or anything else that would equate to 'theft'.

As for your indignancy, it's probably best left in the hands of the original photographer to decide whether they'll be upset about it, no? If he isn't terribly upset, (and his posts in this thread lead me to believe he's not, and is handling it perfectly well), then leave it at that.

I got that image in my Joke-of-the-Day email about two weeks after the challenge and contacted Jason about it -- it appears that he has reconciled himself to the loss of control over this particular image ...
06/22/2009 06:07:18 PM · #19
While it is not my picture, and not my problem, I think it would be nice for the guy to give proper credit, and that the photographer has given permission.

If for no other reason that people get used to seeing credit given, and get the idea that they might want to get permission and give credit as well. As long as the Internet is a seemingly limitless supply of images, things will not improve.

Would this fix the problem? No... But any step, no matter how small, is a step.

Now, if only I could come up with an image that somebody wanted to take. (You have no idea how disheartening it is to run TinEye time after time, with no hits... :-)

I'm cool as long as nobody is claiming they took it or making money off it. Otherwise I just consider it flattery.

So I can post your images on any forum under my name, say nothing of the source, the link isn't back to DPC or any site you're using, and that's OK?

I may not say I took it, but it sure as hell implies I did.

My website is full of images and I don't specifically mention that I took them. Since I'm not really selling any of those images, can I put yours up there?

Perhaps I can put them in my blog too! Then I'll get lots of traffic and be famous for a canon frog pic or any of the other ribbon winning images you have. I won't mention that I took them, or that I didn't. I'll just let folks draw their own conclusion.

As long as I don't sell them, it's ok with you then? I can just use them to drive traffic to my blog and website!

That's still wrong, IMO. And if Sam seems to think it's OK to do it and it seems many, even you, think so, then I guess perhaps we (as a society) have gone beyond the point of no return.

Forget the finger in the dike, we're all doomed.

(P.S. As to //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=912056, I guess the RIAA folks think like me. I am not alone afterall!)

Terrific take on the issue, Jason.

I had one of my images "ripped off".....it ended up on this really spectacular European site showcasing fabulous landscapes.

I hate it when that happens......8>)

Good grief, Chris.....mountain out of a molehill!

You'll never instill a sense of ethics in the great unwashed masses, nor can you police everything you've put on the Web.

You know perfectly well that the only real security is to not post images on the Web that you don't want to show up elsewhere.

If Jason's okay with this situation, you have no say.

Relax!

I'm pretty sure at least one of us has gone past that point.

Seriously Prof this was really uncool of you to do to Sam or anyone. I really think you need to sit back and look at how you are acting and really consider if you really want to represent yourself or your company this way. The page that Sam linked was posted here a few days ago I didn't see you go crazy on the guy who blogged it. Yeah no one wants their stuff stolen but, no one but you apparently, thought that he posted images that were his own. Come on stop acting like this and get back to making money.

Let me get this straight.

You run across an image you believe is being used unethically, so you want to make the original photographer aware of the situation (albeit in a very public and aggressive nature). So far so good.

Then the original photographer says, "s'aight, I'm good"...

... and you throw a tantrum.

Wha?!

lol.

For the record, I consider anything I put up on the internet to be Creative Commons. Free and Fair Use. Credit me if and when you can, as a bonus, but enjoy.

I hope that doesn't cause you too much pain.
