Use a lighter grey instead of black on the mask where the letters are.

ETA: or, if you are needing to mask off the letters, do a selection (ctrl click on the thumbnail) hit ctrl+shift+i and invert it, then click the mask icon.

the question is a bit confusing... Do you mean this?

Take your image, make a new blank layer. Make your rectangular selection using the marquee tool, and use the paint bucket to fill the selection in on the new layer.

Now you'll have a black rectangular layer (I'm thinking this is what you meant by mask).

Now, use the type tool to create the type you'll eventually want cut out of the rectangle, or where the image will show through. So essentially type all over the black with your small writing.

CTRL click the text layer to make a selection out of the entire layer.

Select the black rectangle layer and hit the delete key.

Turn off the text layer.

Is that what you wanted? clarify, and I can probably help.
