I recently switched from Windows to Mac, a step I am really happy about except that I do not have a photo editing software anymore. It's now a month that I struggle with the Adobe customer service to get a platform change from Windows to Mac, but after countless contacts I am just told I am impatient. And that they have to check that one of my serial numbers is not pirated software and that takes time. I owned 4 versions of Photoshop and after all the money I spent on these I thought that I would deserve a better treatment, but that's my mistake!
So is there any alternative to Adobe? Sadly Paintshop Pro is not available for mac! Anything else? |

The Big List of Free Software - many free options discussed here, which might be more helpful, since I doubt you really want to spend more money right away while you wait for Adobe to give you a new serial #.
If you're looking or willing to spend some money, I'll give my obligitory plug for Lightroom; you can use it to streamline your entire workflow, and PS will plug right into it as an editing back end once you have the serial # straightened out.

| no, not really. If you need Photoshop, there isn't a good alternative. Aperture or Lightroom are good but very different. |

The software that came with your D300 should have a mac editer on it, I used to like Nikon software for editing. The Gimp is pretty good too but if you wanna pay a little bit then I have Photoshop elements installed on my lappy and I must say its really very good for a cheap version of photoshop and comes in at around £80

iPhoto should have been pre-installed on your Mac.
Graphic Converter has been around for a long time, has a good reputation, and is inexpensive.
You could use one of the software emulators (Parallels, Boot Camp, etc.) and just run Windows on your Mac, and use your current PC version of Photoshop -- supposedly it will run as fast or faster as on a Windows machine. |

That's what I was afraid of. If there was more competition, I guess the customer service would be better...
I might try the GIMP. Lightroom looks nice but I have a little Adobe allergy at the moment ;-). Aperture does not have layers, does it?
Does anybody know Corel Painter? I wonder if it has filters like USM and Gaussian blur, then it could be interesting!

Try GIMP. I use it at work, since we can't afford Photoshop there. It does almost all the same things, just in a different layout. I've been very impressed with it and if I were ever in a position myself where I couldn't afford PS, I'd definitely use it.
Edited to add: Your troubles with Adobe are just another example of how they obviously don't care. For the large sums of money we spend on their software, you'd think that ongoing support and customer service would be a given - apparently they figure that since they're the "industry standard" they don't have to worry about such things. IMO it's shameful that they've strung you along for 4 months - have you tried working your way up their ranks to someone who might be able to actually help you?

The cross-platform PhotoLine 32 is the closest thing to Photoshop for under $100.

Aperture isn't really editing software, it's more of a workflow management thing.
It does all the RAW conversion stuff (shadows / highlights, WB, saturation, etc, etc) but for editing you have to use an external program such as Photoshop or GIMP. Saying that, I don't think I could live without it now, it's permanently open on my Mac. |
