Till now I did not carry out editing on the photos, first because I did not have the software and next because it looks pretty daunting task to me. I have been tweaking the photos with Picasa and have now come to realise that editing the photos is also part of improving my photography. I would need help on choosing a photo editing software. I am thinking of going for CS4, one of my friend suggested me CS4 extended, need suggestion on which to buy. Also for HDR photography, is CS4 enough or do I need to go for photomatix. I keep on hearing the software Topaz in this forum, what additional features has it got. So need some suggestions ...

I use CS4 and love it ... but I've been using Photoshop for 10 years and I still don't know half of what CS4 can do. I learn something new about it every week.

Suggest you walk before you run. CS4 is a high performance sports car, infinitely capable and nearly infinitely confusing when you're new to it.

Suggest getting latest Elements, a couple of books and a couple of classes and spend less than you would for CS4. Then when you learned the basics of driving Elements, go get that sportscar.

Just my opinion.

Check out this thread for links to free editing software.

If you've never done any photo editing, and you're going to buy something, I'd also suggest starting with Elements and not Photoshop -- when you find yourself limited, I'm pretty sure you can upgrade fairly reasonably.

I would not suggest the extended version unless the person knows CS4 thoroughly, the extra features are so advanced. Also the extended version is more for 3D, motion, and video graphics. Here is a chart that will let you compare the two.

You can also try Corel Paintshop pro free for 30 days. It retails in the same neighborhood as Elements does, but you can often find it on sale at stores for $50 or less. You can find a link to download the trial version in this thread that we have going right now.

There is a free version of photomatix available. It does not include all the adjustment methods the pay version does, but it works well for my purposes. Look for "photomatix basic 1.2....freeware" on their download page.
