So easy to say and so hard to do. I generally comment on about 10 to 15% of the entries. This week I was shamed into trying to comment on every picture in "Leading Lines" by Natasha who said she was commenting on all the "The Eggs". It was just too hard and draining; I could only do about half. Also, I was flamed a bit and decided I still don't have the hang of giving good feedback. I'll just comment where I think I have something that will help and follow my mother's rule, "Don't say anything if you can't say something nice."

I good primer here. I'll study it some more.

Thanks for the guidelines. Good food for thought.

In general, I try to say something about the shots I rate, but sometimes I run up against a photograph that I just can't think of anything to say about. Does that happen to anybody else?

Thanks for posting this. Being new to DPC, I've felt hesitant to comment on many of the photos. The few I have commented on, I've tried to be helpful or relate how the photo itself made me feel.

I've had a good background in photography, but still consider myself fairly amateur at it. This seems like a great group to learn from and I look forward to joining in more from now on.

These are good guidelines and hopefully they'll help us all in the long run!

Great job! Would be great if we all could follow your points...I for one will work on it. I would like to offer up one more thought. The folks here are of many nations and not all with english as a first language. I do my best to keep this in mind when I comment as well as recieve. there has been times when I felt a little put off by a comment only to find they had positive intent, just unable to communicate clearly.

This is a really good guide to commenting on photos. I generally comment on only a few, as I find it difficult to offer criticism without sounding judgemental. Thanks for the tips.

This is a great tutorial, maybe it will lead to less generic messages.

Two things on giving feed back that maybe should be added...

1) Don't only focus on the negative. If there are aspects of the photo that you liked or worked for you, mention those too and why they worked if you feel wordy.

2) Don't say anything that you wouldn't want said to you. The "Golden Rule" still applies.

bump...for us newbies...a good tutorial to review for getting and receiving comments

Bump again... it appears lately that some could benefit from this.

My comment would be that, if possible, suggest a fix for the problem you've noted. I may have realised, for example, that the shadow was a bit strong on the background, but not that moving away from it a bit would help. And yes, DEFINITELY comment on what you really do like.
Commend, recommend, commend (as time allows, of course)

March 31 appears to be well on the way to becoming the traditional date for bumping this thread (check a couple of posts back).

Maybe the admins could automate that function ... : )

This is good. I came to this site becouse I missed the feedback I used to have in photo school. But to many people just say "good" or "bad". The whole idea of comments here is to let people know what works or does not work with their photos so that they can improve. Good comments tell me what people liked or disliked and how they think I could improve the shot next time.

I wonder if some think the score of 10 means your photo is excellent but it only says good. Now to the bottom score which says bad, it's hard for me to give a 1 with a good conscience because we truly don't know what some of the photos are trying to portray especially if they are more into the art aspect of photography instead of studio photography. Just thinking aloud.

Sadly enough it should be pointed out to all members in an email on a regular basis. There is one person in particular that needs to learn teaching skills if he post any comments. People like this make it unsuitable to be a part of any contest. And I feel if you go through the time and effort to join in a competition, unless you see the entrant did nothing except shoot a pic, a 5 is as low as it goes. Giving 1 -3 just to make your pic look the best is simply cheating others out of a good experience. And no I'm not a whiny cry baby. This is simply the way I feel. Too many mean people running the show.

I absolutely completely and utterly disagree with you on this. If someone feels my photo deserves a 1-3 I hope that that is the score they give me; if they wish to leave a comment telling me their reasoning, that is welcome - I may not agree with them, but that is my prerogative. When I vote (and I haven't for some time) I use the whole scale, although both 1s and 10s are not common from me. If you enter a contest, either juried or voted, you have to be tough enough to take the rough with the smooth.

Fully agree with your comments SaraR. Everybody has there own idea of what makes a good/bad photograph and it's great that we don't all agree what this is. There are some people who routinely give 1 votes whenever there is a suggestion of nudity, does that mean the photo is bad? No, but it's bad to the person who gave it a 1. As long as people are consistent in the way they approach their scoring the whole scale should be used.

It always amuses me how bent out of shape people get if 1-3 votes are used, but rarely complain about the 8-10 votes that in a way are as "wrong" as the 1-3 votes.
