Well, we've done it! We've booked our very special holiday! :)

On Monday 28th December 2009 Andi ( Ecce Signum) and I will board a plane bound for Sydney to start a very special holiday! We both have big birthdays this year (Andi hit 50) and next year (I hit 30) and wanted to do something to celebrate (or commiserate?). This trip has been talked about and planned for a couple of years now at least...and I might be just a bit excited!

The possible GTG dates and provisional attendees are:

Sydney – 30th December - long shot as I realise the city is going to be really busy but we're there so might as well see if any of you are ;-)

Brisbane – 13th January 2010

talj
Ecce Signum
Beetle
Fetor
surfdabbler
plamprec
sherpet and Peter

So, the plan for the Brisbane GTG is to meet at 4:00 pm at the end of the Queen Street pedestrian mall (which is at the corner of Edward Street and Queen Street). We'll then stroll up the mall together, across Victoria Bridge, and into Southbank Parklands. We should get to see everything in daylight and if we last long enough, we can hang out in the rather pretty parklands until dark (sunset is before 7pm). After dark, we'll then have the city skyline, as well as some pretty lighting and landscaping in Southbank itself.

Karin (Beetle) and her husband are going to bring some food with them for a BBQ in the park so, if you can make it, let us know if you'd like anything specific to eat! Really looking forward to meeting you all!! :-)

Auckland - 25th January 2010

talj
Ecce Signum
Rinac and Co ;-)
Nuzzer
JaimeVinas
3DsArcher
kiwiness and Anastasia - Possibly :-)

* If you might be able to meet us somewhere along the way let us know and we'll give you greater details on where we will be and when!

You'll be able to follow us via our blog if you're interested :-)

23 days to go!!!!!

you will LOVE Sydney on New Years Eve...be prepared for it to be mentally busy though. Have you booked a hotel yet for then because that could be an issue if you haven't. There are loads of vantage points to see the fireworks. They usually have a website closer to time as to where to go.

Thankfully hotel is all booked, though I think we are a little out of the way with the monorail on our doorstep. I had a look at the site for the vantage points but it's so confusing! And I dont know if I can be responsible for us accidently ending up in an alcohol free zone so might just leave the decision to Andi lol

Rydges World Square

It's actually the only hotel I haven't booked directly myself. Our travel agent booked this one and I am hoping it's not too far away from everything.

Yes I am so lucky as Natalya and Andi will be here in Caloundra visiting us on the 10th and 11th January.....

Anyone close by, that would like to meet them, maybe we could organize lunch somewhere close by, for us all to get together. Please contact me if you like to meet up with them.

We have been looking forward to this for so long now and finally it is happening.....

The place you have booked for Sydney sound great, and very central for you both.

Counting the months now until your visit to us here in Australia.....

love shez & pete

Thanks for the link Lisa. I can rule out some due to them not having disabled access but there are still so many places! Plenty of time to get our heads around it all though :)

WOOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!

Hopefully I can catch up with you guys in both Brissy and Auckland, but at this stage, it'll just be Auckland. We could hunt down Nuzzer and coax him into showing us his super secret shooting spot! ;)

I'm sure you could hunt him down. Which super secret spot is it you are after exactly? I haven't ribboned in over two years so maybe the spot has been all used up now :(

I'd be keen to meet up when you are in the Auckland area.

Well I did say where it was in the notes and until late last year you had to drive right past it to go north. The spot is a lay-by on the side of the old State Highway 1. I'll be happy to share the secret but both of those shots were taken at sunrise so at that time of year we need to be there around 6:30am

to get there it would be still quicker to take the toll road from auckland :P

Granted I've only been through Wenderholm once, and I think I may have been sleeping at the time.

So, we all crashing at your place then Gerry? It's the only way I'll be there early enough for sunrise! :)

I am currently in Wellington NZ, My wife and I are planning to go to Sydney for the New Year fireworks. Would be up for a GTG there or while you are in NZ.... Always look forward to meeting fellow DPC folk. I will put a watch on this thread.

Hey Brian, have you been in Sydney for New Year before?
06/01/2009 09:51:39 AM · #18
No, This will be my first time. We are going to be flying over on the 30th and leaving early AM on the 1st to return back to NZ. Staying with some of my wifes friends in Sydney while we are there.

I've been looking for info on photography for NYE as it seems they do bag searches and stuff which inevitably means they won't be keen on anyone with more than a point and shoot...Early days I know but might ping them an email in the next couple of months to find out if were ok snapping in any of their vantage points :)

We fly to Cairns ourselves on the 1st...though I think we get time to recover from any hangover that might be around ;) Hopefully we'll manage a GTG with you guys before we go our seperate ways :)

I think you will find the bag search is for alcohol and drugs etc.. they try to keep this a family friendly event. I am quite sure your camera gear would be fine.. email them to check if you prefer.

Am used to the UK and it's crazy policies. I went to watch an important England football match on a big screen in the city I was living in at the time (a couple of years ago) and their bag search policy was for alcohol and glass etc. So, let them see my bag...no alcohol or glass but my camera with the 70-200 on...and was told I couldn't go in. Had similar happen twice since then so tend to check everywhere I go now that I'm not gonna hit trouble!

football matches would be the same here but I am 99% sure that you will be fine with your gear for the fireworks.
