So, there I was enjoying my vacation strolling through Vienna when, somehow, my backpack comes unzipped and my 24-70 and 70-200 lenses tumble to the ground. Luckily, the glass did not break and I was able to shoot the rest of the trip. However, the front ends of both lenses got beat-up badly (as you can see from the thumbnail). Can this be repaired or am I out of luck? If they can be repaired, any suggestions as to where I can send them?

Thanks for any insight you can offer.

When wearing a backpack always make sure your zippers are together, down to one side, and not at the top in the middle.

A big bummer. I did something similar on my trip to Hawaii - only mine involved the pacific ocean....

Your best bet is to send them back to Canon. They can do all sorts of repairs and they have all the parts etc to do repair. Sending them to another repair center really doesn't make any sense to me, especially as this is top end glass.

I dropped my 70-200 lens also, luckily the filter took the impact and bent like your lens. I was able to replace the filter. I wonder if a filter would've helped in your case.

I recommend putting a going out and buying UV filters to stick on any other lens's you have, the filter will take the damage, protect your lens from scratches, and its a heck of a lot cheaper to replace.

In answer to your question: Yes! Canon can repair them. A similar accident happened to me and I sent them to Canon; not cheap but well fixed. Much cheaper than new lenses. I really think my lens came back in better than the original before my accident - better focus, etc. The techs did an excellent job.

I just did this to a new lens as well. Bummer, huh?? I recommend sending it back to Canon directly for an estimate. They are good time wise, and have been very reasonable when I've sent things to be repaired. Just get the estimate first - if its too expensive, just have them ship the lens back to you. Good luck!

Yep, back pack lesson learned the hard way.

Thanks all, lenses are off to Canon tomorrow.
