Ok, if no one's starting a new thread for this, you'll have to put up with this stupid name for a week.

I'm barely still live after the grundge, but it seems like I might do slightly better in this one. Hard to tell after only three votes though.

My son has less views, but 7 votes. I don't know if it's good or bad that people are looking at mine but not voting... Hopefully they're contemplating whether to give it a 9 or a 10 and are having a hard time deciding :)

I forgot to withdraw my entry this morning, as I had intended. But it is a still life, though some of the thumbnails of other entries I've seen don't fit that category, in my opinion.

Oh yes - there will be revenge.

Horrible and vicious revenge.

I haven't voted yet. :>)

Later,

Tom

PS: The next challenge, I'm going for the lowest score possible - a 1 across the board.

HAH!! I'll win by losing. :>)

I knew this one probably wouldn't do good but I entered anyway because I liked it and that is all that really matters. I am tired of being gun shy so I am just going to keep entering to keep my creative juices flowing.

I think this is going to be an odd scoring challenge. There are a number of photos that clearly don't meet the definition of a still life, there are even more photos that might meet a very broad definition, but still wouldn't be considered a still life by most people. If this many people have varied definitions; the voters do as well. I think that's why we're seeing odd scores.

I'm really bummed.

Teafran said "Clearly a bunch of illiterate and unappreciative morons. :>) "
I have a feeling that the people who are voting don't know what a still life is..... and that's a problem.
Any way we could explain that to them??

So what's your definition? (this is hard because I KNOW mine is a still life but I'm VERY suspicious that the voters don't think so and I can't tell you why without telling you about my picture).

Wikipedia says it pretty well - but we have this discussion every time the challenge comes up. So "ya takes your chances."

A still life (plural still lifes [1]) is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on) in an artificial setting. With origins in ancient times and most popular in Western art since the 17th century, still life paintings give the artist more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition than do paintings of other types of subjects such as landscape or portraiture. Still life paintings, particularly before 1700, often contained religious and allegorical symbolism relating to the objects depicted. Some modern still life breaks the two-dimensional barrier and employs three-dimensional mixed media, and uses found objects, photography, computer graphics, as well as video and sound.

My definition is inanimate objects that are placed in a setting of some sort. Wikipedia says mostly inanimate--but the rest of the definitions in the encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc, say inanimate. I also don't think that finding something where it lies and taking a picture of it is a still life. It seems like the arrangement is a large part of what makes it a still life.

agree? disagree?

Most definitely. So many don't come close to meeting what I would call a still life, even with the broadest interpretation of the definition. I did not enter.

Finally received a couple of comments. Both said what they disliked about it. Which is great don't get me wrong but their reasons are the reason I took the photo the way I did. I didn't want to be part of the norm when it came to still life. This is an awesome feeling. Having a low score and not being upset about it because I took the photo that I wanted to take knowing what the complaints would be. Wooo Hoo. I am feeling the creative juices flowing.
