I am real close to pressing the order button to upgrade to a D300, I am pretty sure I will be happy I did it but money is tight so I really want to be sure. I have a wedding to shot for a family member which will cover some of the cost. I like the idea of being able to bump the ISO up for the lower light shots and hear it does a much better job at higher ISO's, D300 user's what are your thoughts?

I also have someone interested in buying my D50 and need to come up with some idea of what a fair price would be, I am selling it along with the 28-80 3.3-5.6 kit lense that came with the camera. Any ideas on a fair price?

If you're shooting a wedding you'll want to have a backup body, even if the 300 is new. Stuff breaks, acts up, etc.

I agree and have that covered, my son does not know it but he will lend me his D50 and possibly be a second shooter...lol

It depends on how far you want to bump up the ISO. I wouldn't go past 800 on the D300, and even then the noise can be quite considerable. To be honest, I think you should spend the money on a fast zoom lens, such as the 17-55 2.8, and use your 50mm 1.8 if its really low light. The D300 is ok, but having just upgraded to the D700 I'm realising how grainy my images were on the D300 anything above (and sometimes including) ISO 400. As prof fate says though, you'll need a backup for a wedding, just in case, or to hold two lenses so you're not constantly changing and missing moments (and risking your gear whilst changing in a hurry!).

I thought about the lens upgrade also, I know glass is one of the best upgrades I could make but I want the file size also.

You take some really beautiful images. Can you stretch yourself to the D700? If you think you'll be doing lots of low light work and more weddings, it might be worth the extra expense, although there's the merry-go-round of the matching lenses then. Difficult to work out what to do - how high ISO can you go on the D50 before its unacceptable?

I see noticble noise whenever I go above 200, I have taken some images in Auto that have used ISO 800 and been decent but still have some small noise issues. I would love to get to the D700 but the cost is a little much. I am going to keep looking at some of the options out there so any ideas are welcome.

Hi,
Just FYI, don't know if you saw a post by Drake back in March but he was trying to sell his D300 w/ an 18-200vr zoom for a smoking price. Here's his link,
