Serious Street Photography - Photography in the tradition of the great street shooters: Cartier-Bresson, Evans, Friedlander, Frank, Winogrand, Levitt, Gilden -- well, maybe not Gilden.

I had a blast last time we did this [Oct. 08, Nov. 08, ongoing], and I learned a lot. The weather's warm and the crazies are out (present company included), so let's do it again, shall we?

Some Rules/Suggestions:

- Shots should be about people in public places and should be candid (at least in attempt). That said, the occasional street portrait or urban scene is fine.

- Why Serious? Pictures of people reading the paper, sleeping, talking on cell phones, or just walking along -- in and of themselves -- don't hold much interest. Notice the emphasis; obviously, if there's some element of contrast or irony, that's different. Use good judgment.

- If you're new to this type of shooting, it's easy to think that the first technically clean, totally candid shot you get is the greatest thing. (I speak from experience.) Resist the urge. Look around first. These Flickr groups have some good examples: Extreme, Hard Core

- 15 shots MAX. Most people can't commit to one shot per day anyway. Think quality, not quantity. Channel any residual energy into commenting. On that note...

- Comment! Comments are the fuel of any side challenge. Comments should be honest (but never degrading). We all have tough skin here, right?

- Shots that are Photoshopped to death, staged, extreme telephoto, etc. miss the point. Keep it honest.

- Share. Shooting settings and notes about how you got the shot are often helpful and always welcome.

- Digital or film is fine. (Hear that, Mephisto, halopes?)

- Join now or anytime during the month. If you do join, however, try to commit to a few shots and at least as many comments.

That's it. Follow the rules or don't. Join the fun or don't. Love me or leave me or don't. So, who's in on this madness?

I have never done a side challenge so I need to ask how it works before I commit.
I guess all I really need to know is how do you post and how do you comment and how is it a challenge - is there ultimately a vote?

Penny, this is right up your alley, so to speak. :-) Side challenges are not voted. You just put the photograph in your portfolio somewhere and post the thumbnail to the thread. Then look at what everyone else posts and leave a few comments. Easy as pie. Except the shooting part - that's a bit harder than pi. :-)

This sounds like fun but I'm intimidated by the 'serious' part. I'm not sure if I'm capable of doing anything quite as good or interesting.

I think I'm going to stick around for the commenting but will only post when something good turns up.

Most likely not taking part, but will surely drop by from time to time.

I'm game.

Not sure if I can live up to the "serious" bit but since I'm really enjoying my street photography just now I'm in. Besides, this will be great to push me!

That sums up "Serious" nicely. No one should be initimidated -- start shooting, pick something decent, post it, and see what happens. Take the feedback back to the street. If something works, develop it; if something doesn't work, rethink it. I'm just trying to set the stage for some candid commenting and for the participants to really push themselves. Ideally we'll all end the month with some new strategies and skills (and hopefully some great photos).

Okay then, sounds good. I'm in.
This is my last month before I have a knee replacement on June 29th, so I needed something good to distract me. Hopefully I'll be able to come up with something good.

sweet, count me in!

Don't put me on the list, as this is not my forte, but I will probably keep an eye on the postings and do some commenting. Maybe I'll learn something.

I'm planning to lurk this thread, & write admiring comments. Also, I'm going to lurk the streets of my 'ville, where it seems there aren't many opportunities for street photography (man mows lawn, film at 11), so my main hope is on blind luck. I admire these very much--looking forward to this. Maybe next time you can put me on the list.

I've enjoyed my first side challenge, the flowers of May. I'm in for this one too please.

Well, please add me to the list. This will be new for me and quite a challenge I am sure. Our Main Street is three blocks long. If the SC was changed to "Serious County Road Photography" I'd be a little more in my element. I'll see what I can do, and I look forward to seeing your work.

Add me to the list as well. This is also my first side challenge, but I do live close to Duke and UNC. I am not worried about finding crazy things to photograph.

Just finished my first side challenge, May Flowers, and learned a lot. I'm loving the 'serious' rule, no reason to stress the quantity. :)

Looking forward to this! I've been idle lately!
