Thanks, Dennis.
There's also a separate thread on legal issues.

Just need everyone's opinion on this,.... does an Automotive Ad have to have a car/automobile in it?

My idea does not include any vehicles in it at all, but I think that it could work as an Ad. How would you treat a photo without a vehicle; would you vote down because of DNMC/Shoehorn, or take it at face value?

depends on how good the add was. If was believable and very good, and didn't appear to be a shoehorn, I wouldn't vote it down. However, my guess would be that it would have to be very good to get passed that "no car" hump for most voters.

I think it would help! It's a car ad after all.

But there may be legal issues with this challenge. The big ones don't want us lot playing in their ballpark, they spend millions on advertising, and won't want a bunch of snap happy photogs raining on their parade.

Wendy, Steve, thank you!!!

My idea will not involve any auto makers in specific, but rather be a generic ad, that could be used for cars, or other products... but being in this challenge would imply that it was for cars. I might just go ahead with it, and if my votes are suffering simply because of DNMC voters, then I will self DQ.

Thanks for the input.

There are many car ads that would just show an engine or other performance component with some wording that suggests that there engine is bigger and faster. To me something like that is totally plausible as an automobile ad. I think the Nissan Titan has some ads like that, even in their commercials.

Usually if your questioning whether some may see it as a shoehorn or not means that you are basically trying to enter a shoehorn and are trying to tell yourself it's not. I know from experience.

There are plenty of very succesful car ads that do not feature cars at all. I think the issue here is that the majority of voters will be expecting a picture of a car or a car component and may vote down anything that doesnt feature such. The reality is that an effective car ad does need to feature either.

BMW car Ad

BMW used car Ad

Mercedes Coupe Ad

Audi Car Ad

VW car Ad

I certainly hope that there are those entries that are brave enough to avoid the cliches and deliver some adverts that are original and attention grabing with or without cars or car components. All IMHO of course.

Of course a car add does not need a car in it. I remember an excellent one with an ibex, which was for a 4WD model. But in a real add, the following question will never rise: "Is it a shoehorn or not?" The doubt will begin to spread in the voters mind like an oilslick. And what was once a doubt is now an outcry about the unfairness of competing with a pretty wildlife/landscape against some ugly steel boxes ;-)

I'm pretty sure I wasn't advocating entering a landscape in a car ad challenge, although a set of tyre tracks (no car in sight) up a picturesque hillside might sell the idea of a 4x4 quite effectively. I was simply trying to point out that this could be a challenge to be different and creative in. Will a non-car pic win, probably not (never say never) but it could be a challenging and rewarding process to enter something different especially as we can use text to help 'sell' our ideas.

As for cars being 'ugly steel boxes' well .... Alfa Romeo Competizione 8C - The most beautiful car in the world! One of the 500 in the world of these lives in my town, if only I could persuade them to let me photograph it ;)

Maybe I will enter a photo of a shoebox and caption it as a Scion Xb. It looks like my drawings of cars when I was a kid. (The new model is slightly less boxy than the original, however)

Can I paste in the logo into the advert, is that considered text or clip art?
05/19/2009 06:52:27 PM · #14
I've currently got 2 ideas, very different though not sure I will manage to pull either off.

nope. text that you create only. don't use any part of a logo or wordmark.

I thought the same thing but knew that it wouldn't fly so I didn't even try.

I am in a bit of a pickle though. I've taken tons of pictures for the challenge. I processed 2 so far and want to do a few more. Of the 2 that I already did I really like them both. I need to probably stop now before I have tons of photo's to choose from. I always choose the wrong one. Are maybe they all the wrong one. I don't know anymore.

I always choose the wrong one even if I only take 1 shot...

Maybe this time we should have the low score win. That way I'll finally be on the top. :-(

Hey Brad, Honestly I don't think its gunna pass, I know what you are shooting at, something like seatbelt presenting safety, or automobile green concept. But in this case I don't think it is an AD to the car it self, it is an AD to the idea or concept.
To me a Mercedes ad .. has to have a mercedes :)
My 2 cents,

Argh.... hmmm..... I already submitted, and I really the photo, but it will be misconstrued as a shoehorn.

I'd love it if someone would take a look at give their honest opinion, if you are willing to skip it in voting. Volunteer(s)?

Sure, I'll take a look. I haven't had any time to vote (or enter) lately anyway. Just send me a PM.

I enjoyed the first 3 ads. They got the point across in a clever way.
