Ok im shooting for a teens shoting teens pregnancy poster contest(no, im not the pregnant one). so the deal is i haveno idea how to shoot it. the idea of the contest is to...

"convey how an unplanned pregnancy would impact you, your family, or your community."

lucky for me, i located an ex friend of mine who's 8 months pregnant. so, any suggestions on how i should go about this? i dont necessarily want to make it negative, but i dont want to do a smiling mom with a belly hanging out shot.

Well, how about realistically thinking how YOUR life would change? That should give you some general ideas, at least.

yeh it would suck for me. i mean it would be cool having a kid, but not for another 7 years at least. hmm. im just not sure how to do a photo to portray that. and my subject is 17 too

I like BeeCee's idea. Think of your current life, and think how it would have to change if you are A-Pregnant, and/or B-Have a Baby............Put this somehow in a photo, struggling to do stuff etc

Or alternatively, you said you didn't want to go negative......

A photo of the Pregnant girl, someone there acting as Boyfriend, plus parents etc, all in different poses. Holding a bottle, supporting her, pile of nappies/clothes etc.........

How about her friends in the background, looking like they are having fun, going to movies, hanging out, cutting up, etc., and she is gathering baby supplies?

My thoughts would go to the classic teen icons and how a big pregnant belly would jar. A cheerleader with the cute little sweater pulling up over and exposed swollen belly. A graduation gown clad line with one girl reaching down to hold the hand of her toddler. I think many girls fail to realize the impact to the "teen lifestyle" would of having to be responsible for a tiny human 24/7. That is the tack my thinking would go.

Or, use a girl that is no longer pregnant because she has already had her baby, which she is busy feeding while previously mentioned friends are having fun.

The problem is that the pregnancy itself doesn't change all that much in life (except huge impact emotionally, of course). It's actually the baby itself that changes things. I'd try working with a teen and a baby--after the pregnancy angle. A group of happy, nice kids walking into a movie theater, with another teen standing off to the side, sad, alone, with a screaming baby.

A shot in the nighttime of school books open on a desk--obviously high school level, like the girl's been studying, but on top of the spread-out papers is a diaper-pad and a baby being changed by a very tired, very harried-looking young girl.

Kids have seen pregnant teen-agers. It won't affect them much to see posters of them. I'd show them the reality of teenage life after pregnancy.

edited to add: ok, there was only two answers when I started writing this!! I take too long to think.

Don't forget the bloodshot eyes with bags under them, from waking up every couple of hours in the middle of the night to do mommy duty. She does not have the luxury of a hubby she can kick out of bed to sometimes do it.

Be very careful about some of these ideas. What is the purpose of the contest? If it is to stop teenage pregnancy, they are not going to look very happily at a poster that's offering support. Some people might take it as condoning teenage pregnancies. (just like some people think teaching sex-ed condones teenage sex)

the object is to show how teen preganncy effects everyone. its not negative or positive, but im sure negative would score higher with the judges. i just dont want to insult the girl:/

ooh, I like the graduation angle. Late to graduation--everyone else lined up, one girl running in late, dragging a 2 year old in one hand, huge, oversized diaper bag in the other, spit up cloth over her shoulder.

Or, if you want to be more realistic, girl with baby watching from the sidelines as her friends graduate--"this was supposed to be my day" type of theme. I know it seems negative--but the unfortunate truth is, a large number of teenagers that get pregnant don't go on to graduate. Don't think of posters as negative or postive--think how you can make an impact. Instead of a nice poster, how about a poster that makes people feel, think, dream, wonder. Think big!

You won't insult her if you make her a part of the process. If her family isn't involved any more and if she's having a hard time with it, she might be interested in helping other girls avoid her situation. If she does have an extended support system, she might still feel for the girls who have to go through this alone. You're not singling her out and telling her story, you and she together are making a statement.

There is no reason why the Boy, or the family, in the shot have to be her boyfriend, or her family. They can be anyone posing in the shot.

My Cousin, at 18, has just had Twins. Unplanned and premature (but doing well, they are 4 days old now). Yes it was a shock to the family, but she will get all the support she needs. I would never encourage teen pregnancy, but I think many people need to realise that it happens, and the teen needs as much support as they can be given......Trying to sell this to the judges, and the wider public, is not encouraging pregnancy........A well taken photograph, with the supporting words and story, should score well no matter what......

It seems like a winning poster makes people stop and think. The thing that I never understood is, how a family can turn their back on a child, just because the child gets pregnant. Unfortunately, I think the poster would be preaching to the already converted. The kids who have a good family life and get pregnant will already get support (yes, with a lot of "what were you thinking", "how could you"s) but they'd still get support. The people who throw the kids out are not likely to be changed/moved because of a poster. Adults can be too narrow-minded. Also, to be completely cynical--if it's adults who will be judging this--I bet they would much rather see kids reaching out to kids than making statements about adults. Thus the Teens Shooting Teens description.

With one essay paper clearly showing an "F" with the comment "you obviously didn't put much time or effort into this". Or the same homework setup with her sitting at the table, but instead of studying she's nodding off while she feeds the baby.

Something like that should be quite easy to do in a classroom and still make it look like home, no?

Go for the demotivational aspect (like the demotivational posters on here at the moment).

Image - Teenage girl with baby in arms looking tired and unhappy.

Slogan - Sex: 8 seconds of fun that will stay with you forever.

(yes, I am aware it's supposed to take longer than that but I was hoping it would add to the humour)

Even a simple shot with effective lighting could work. You could place one beam of light on her in the middle of the darkness looking at a group of partying friends on the other end of the frame, lit in the same way. The light and the darkness between them could represent how this change has made her different from from the rest of the crowd even though she's in the same room as them

I think you need to consider your panel/voters. If it's a mature panel you'll need to do something different to if it's a young panel. Regardless of the technicals, it's the emotion that will make the difference and the 2 age groups have very different emotions on the matter.
