Could some of the more technically minded photographers on this forum please explain - in layman's terms - how these ultrasonic motors work?

I looked it up on Wikipedia, but the article was a bit too technical for me. What I sort of understood from that article is that they rely on some sort of vibrations caused by ultrasonic waves?

The old Nikon AF lenses used that little screw protruding out the mount to drive the rotation of the lens. That I understood: gears, cogs, and a little electric motor.

Can anyone please demystify the ultrasonic motor for me?

Vibration in the stator causes motion in the rotor.

Try saying that 10 times quickly, lol

Haha. Yes. That's a neat summary of what Wikipedia said.

Now explain to me what a stator is, and how the vibrations are converted to rotations of the lens :-)

I told her that and she still lost focus :/

Where the hell did you get that? There appears to be quite a hole in my education.

My God... It is taking less and less time for perfectly good threads to become ridiculous.

bobonacus started it. ;-)

Zueszen, the pellet/poison thing is a Danny Kaye bit from "The Court Jester."

Ah, and I thought it was posthuman distraction.

The stator (red) has vibration induced to it which causes the rotor (blue) to turn. Notice the stator is stationary - just vibrating and the rotor is spinning, as indicated by the white lines present on each. Not sure why you need such a technical explanation as to how it works. Action, reaction. Stimulus, response. Pure electrical magic. Numerous links from Google explain it but if you didn't understand the one on Wiki, most of the others are far more technical.

Pure curiosity? Mine is now satisfied, anyway :-)
