Could some of the more technically minded photographers on this forum please explain - in layman's terms - how these ultrasonic motors work?
I looked it up on Wikipedia, but the article was a bit too technical for me. What I sort of understood from that article is that they rely on some sort of vibrations caused by ultrasonic waves?
The old Nikon AF lenses used that little screw protruding out the mount to drive the rotation of the lens. That I understood: gears, cogs, and a little electric motor.
Can anyone please demystify the ultrasonic motor for me? |

Haha. Yes. That's a neat summary of what Wikipedia said.
Now explain to me what a stator is, and how the vibrations are converted to rotations of the lens :-) |

The stator (red) has vibration induced to it which causes the rotor (blue) to turn. Notice the stator is stationary - just vibrating and the rotor is spinning, as indicated by the white lines present on each. Not sure why you need such a technical explanation as to how it works. Action, reaction. Stimulus, response. Pure electrical magic. Numerous links from Google explain it but if you didn't understand the one on Wiki, most of the others are far more technical.
