canon 5D v 40D - DPChallenge Forums

Hi everyone

My hubby is wanting to buy me a canon 1D, I already have a 40D. I would love it if you let me know the benefits of having a 1D as I have noticed there is no built in flash or image stabilizer on a 1D. I really don't want my husband to spend a lot of money if I won't get huge benefits from it. I think he's thinking of this because a friend has asked me to take her wedding photos.

I'm at work at the mo so will only be able to peek at any replies in slack periods just so you don't think I'm being rude.

Fran, you have put 1D in your post but 5D in your title can you state exactly which it is he is considering that way you could get more informed info.

Well I can only talk about the upgrade from a 40D to a 5D (classic) as I took this move myself recently, I love the way the 5D processes images they look so much nicer than those I had from my 40D, I really like the way the 5D handles noise at higher ISOs as well and full frame is wonderful if you have a wide lens, but bear in mind if you shoot long range you will lose a lot of distance, my 70-200mm just doesnt have the reach now even with the 2x converter on it.

What I don't like is the LCD the images don't really look anything like they will once on the computer but the 40D didn't suffer from this much at all.

I guess the thing to ask yourself is do you need the upgrade, is the 40D doing everything you ask of it and are you finding yourself unable to get shots due to the 40Ds limitations. I made the upgrade simply because my wide lenses were not anywhere near wide enough at 1.6x crop other than that I would probably still be shooting the 40D (even though I have it as backup / the wifes camera).

As I will be photographing my friend's wedding I thought the 5D would be better for low light. I'd also keep my 40D (my hubby's happy with my old 350D). I just worry that I won't do it justice as I'm still very much a novice (when you see all the amazing pics on DPD). I still have a lot to learn.

I shoot weddings with a 5D and my partner shoots with a 40D. I do the post processing and I can see a lot of differences between the 2. The 5D seems to produce much more pleasing colors then the 40D. I am noticing an orangy color cast from the 40D compared to the 5D. Just recently I upgraded to the 5D mark II and my partner bought the classic 5D from me, so now we are both shooting with 5D's. Yay!

How's the focusing speed (especially in low light) compare between the 5D/40D, 5DII/50D?

The 5D mark II is sweeeeet. It's main advantages are:
- low noise at high iso,
- ability to record video,
- full frame, and
- with 21 million effective pixels it's comparable with the 1D class of camera (and you can print some nice billboards if you like!).
[Ed] One other thing - the 5D can take any Canon lense except EF-S lenses (I had to ditch my fave 10-20mm Sigma when I got mine).

The 40D or even 50D is a better choice if you are into wildlife or sport photography, with the superior frames-per-second count in continuous mode of 6.5fps (40D), or 6.3fps (50D).... (versus the 5D mkII's 3.9 frames per sec).

If it were me I'd go with the 5D MkII :D

I did wonder about the fps but as I would still have my 40D then I guess I would use that for sports pics but then again I only have 2 ef lenses and they are the 70-200mm and the 100mm so as yet I would have no day to day lens for the 5D.Hmmmm I feel an early Christmas present coming on!

What a decision to have to make!!

I agree that the 5D Mark II is most excellent. But just FYI, if you want to shoot a photo for a billboard, the 21 mpeg size is probably overkill. :-)
I've read how 6-8 megapixels would be more than enough for a billboard, as those big signs have much bigger pixels/dots as they are viewed from hundreds of feet away.

Of course, you can crop in more on a 21 MP photo than an 8 MP photo...

Also note that 21 megapixels when shot in RAW becomes a HUGE file, about 25MB (my computer hates me right about now!) The 5D MkII has RAW1 and RAW2 which lets you shoot with less megapixels, I believe the RAW1 is around 10mp, which will lower the file size.
