Shouldn't a picture about City Life give me a feeling of what its like to live in your city? Shouldn't it at least give me an idea of how any living thing would live in a city? Shouldn't it at least have a picture of this living thing? Does a wide angle view of a city tell me what its like to live in that city?

I didn't submit a picture this week because I could not come up with a picture that really portrayed what its like to live in the city, for human, cat, dog, rat, or any other misc living creature.

Two simple words: I agree.

yeah, me, too. i think it was a really hard challenge though, because city life is difficult to depict in just one shot. and some people did a good job!

here's my 'outtake'. i like the shot a lot, i just didn't think it fit in enough. anyone care to comment anyway?

Chariot,

I think if a shot can convery the feeling of city life, or an aspect of it, that is certainly an acceptable interpretation of the challenge. For me, part of rating a photo is trying to understand where the photographer was coming from. If I can wrap my mind around their concept, I''ll probably score it highly. I''ve stretched my horizons quite a bit in the process.

I don''t want to give away my shot, but I tried to take an offbeat approach to the challenge. My score is about where I expected it would be (one of my lower ones), but comments suggest a few people got what I was trying to do, and that''s what I was going for.

I also skipped this challenge gr8. I don't think I would of done very well. Like you say some of the folks did a very GOOD job. Several fine shots this time.
The lone reader...? Hum, I like it a lot. Great DOF and cool TAT! <g> I don't think it would of fit the challenge but who knows others may think so. Did you know the guy reading? Nice b&w shot. Kee

chariot,

There was a lot of discussions this week regarding the same questions. People have different interpretations. I believe that in many ways a cityscape photo does show city life, in such that it displays the crowdedness or the complete opposite. Some of the discussions argued that their 'city' was not a metropolis, yet it is still a city. I also believe that the buildings and structures insinuate life. I noticed that many of the cityscape photos contained plantlife.

It really comes down to one own's perception. If one has a more literal perception, then be it. Personally, I had a hard time myself...thinking how to get my small city into an 'interesting' photo. I was going to submit a photo of a USPS blue mailbox, but thought maybe it was a little to inanimate.

I'm not arguing, just pointing out other views.

Looking forward to this week's challenge.

A good example of having an open mind is the photo titled "Paranoid". This photo conveys a lot about city life without having a single building in it.

fran,

how did you get that unreal looking almost pencil shaded texture on the columns and floor? it almost looks rendered!

congrats on your 2nd place trophy : )

It would have been fine by me. What with the columns and the guy's (minimal) attire, the feeling I got was a reminder of Greek "city-states," and I might have tried for a title which accentuated that more...

magnetic, you are the second person to ask me that. i honestly don't know. luck i guess ;) this is taken at the kennedy center. i just converted the shot to b&w because there's an unsightly bright orange ribbon just behind the guy's head and it wasn't so visible in b&w. then i adjusted contrast slightly. that's all.

congrats on your 2nd place trophy : )

thanks! :)

Hmmm...this is an older photo of mine I was going to re-shoot for this week, but I never got a chance when there was decent light so I submitted something completely different...

GeneralE I like that one - it has 'life' in it - the plants. One of the first ones was that of a FedEx truck - seen every day.

Ok so I'm just gonna have to take a few HAPPY pills and go back and see what each picture tells me. I guess I've just been very frustrated the last couple of weeks and I have liked very few photos.

Help me out here....does anyone thinkthese would have been representative of city life?

thanks...Karen

gr8, I like the one of the guy reading...I love the lines in it...and General, I think the mailbox is great....I love the vines growing over it...and the house in the background.

Save some for me. It's not that I haven't liked the pictures, it just that they did not meet the challenge IMO. I won't get into why because I've only been here a couple of weeks and have seen the same arguments several times. But if something doesn't evoke some sense of city life in me, I'm not going to give it a good score. I couldn't even please myself with this one, so I decided to stay out of this challenge. Some people, however, have done a great job.

This challenge was the first that I entered. I had a hard time picking a shot to submit; and I am finding the comments range from "great I love it" to "where is the city life?". I have commented similarly myself. The 'life' bit I think was really broadly interperted. Some people took it to mean feelings or a way of thinking; and others took it to be a very literal 'must show living people'. I had a hard time picking a nice shot without people or a lesser shot that was did have some people in the foreground. The best shot I had was just a shot of a building; and I didn't submit it because it didn't really show city life; but looking at the other entries, I think I would have scored higher with my building shot than the one I actually submitted.

Great photo! You should have submitted it. I love everything about it. The guy's posture, tattoo, shoes, etc are very interesting. I also love the pillars and the pattern in the concrete. 9 (don't you feel bad for not submitting now?)

I think they do! Great photos. I like the one with the statue of the woman and baby...there's a lot of city life in it (the art, the buildings, the people, the streets) ...a lot to take in (in a good way).

I just got back, so I'd like to step in here. I wish I hadn't submitted this week. I convinced myself that I should do a 'live thing' city pix and passed over what I now think would have been much stronger shots. To answer the question though, I think that 'City Life' is the feeling of the city, it's personality. Sometimes you can bring out what this city means to you much more effectively if there aren't people (or dogs, cats, rats, etc.) cluttering up the frame.

I had a hard time with this one too. I submitted and unsubmitted the same photo three times. Here it is. I chased this feral kitten (and his siblings, mom, and dad) all over a parking lot and under buildings on my hands and knees to get this shot. Alas, it's not that great and doesn't look enough like city life to me. It was taken in an old run down part of our small city and the backdrop looks too much like someone's country porch.

The ultimate frustration. I went down to Galveston on Sunday WITHOUT my camera and saw a ton of potential city life photos. I'm new to the game, but I'm learning frustration plays a big part of it.

At least the city life challenge is over...there are a lot of great submissions for it.

Lisa, when you get your D1x, don't get rid of your Oly. You'll end up taking it to places you wouldn't dream of hauling your big gun.

I think this challenge is a bit like "On the Road". People who use the challenge topic as a narrow set of instructions have a lot of trouble not only finding a photo to take but also voting. People who use the challenge topic as a launching pad to inspire them have a great time, are happy with their photos and have fun voting on the others. It's not as though the first group will ever change their mind about the way they approach the challenges, but I do think they get less out of this place than the second group.
