I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread listing many of the free image editing programs available. I plan on watching this thread so I can easily find it again whenever someone is in need of an image editing or processing app. Please help make this list better by adding any others you know of that I overlooked. I know there are plenty out there. Most of these are Windows apps, but some also have Mac versions.

Photo Editors:

GIMP The GNU Image Manipulation Program (Mac version require the X11 framework to be installed)

Seashore Macintosh only. Based on GIMP, but runs natively under OSX.

Paint.net

Picasa

IrfanView

RAW converters:

RAW Therapee

UFRaw

Rawshooter essentials (Note: This company has been bought by Adobe and its technology is being integrated into Lightroom. Updated freeware versions are unlikely.)

HDR:

Photomatix Basic (Note: this is a limited featured freeware version that only has the tone compressor option. The pay product has more fucntionality, but the freeware is perfectly usable. I frequently use it to get wider dynamic range from a single RAW file. Of course, it can merge multiple exposures.) Update 11-09: This freebie appears to no longer be offered.

Luminance HDR Formerly QTPFSGUI

Plug-ins:

SmartCurve Curves plug in, useful with PhotoShop Elements which does not have curves built in.

Photo-Plugins A collection of image adjustment plug-ins. My favorite is the b/w conversion tool, which has far more functionality than PaintShop Pro's channel mixer.

Mehdi Plugins A collection of image adjustment and special effects plug ins.

Other:

Calibrize Help you to adjust your monitor more accurately than just eyeballing it. Not as good as having a hardware calibrator, but the price is right.

Free field guides from Photoanswers.uk Not software, but I felt this was worth including here. A nice set PDF manuals covering important aspects of camera skills.

Exif date changer modifies the date and time attributes of the EXIF data in your digital photos. I'd avoid using this one on challenge entries. I would expect it to leave some mention behind that it has handled the image.

I used autostitch for this image. I havent spent enough time with it to figure out how to get the best high res settings, but I was very pleased with its results.

More printing than editing ---

Rasterbator - "The Rasterbator creates huge, rasterized images from any picture. Upload an image, print the resulting multi-page pdf file and assemble the pages into extremely cool looking poster up to 20 meters in size."

Both online and download versions available.

This is uber-cool software when you want to print really really r e a l l y big.
