I just got a hot shoe optical trigger and for some reason I only get one flash out of the 430EX and then I have to power cycle it to get one more. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong or is this just a sad fact of the 430EX?

I'm curious about the answer to this as well, as I was considering the same setup.

However, I fear that it may be a sad fact of the 430 - Canon Speedlites seem to dislike any sort of slave attachments in general.

Did you get the canon optical trigger? I have the canon ST-E2 transmitter and never had a problem with both my 430ex flashes. If they are in manual mode they will go to sleep, fairly quickly, if they are set for ETTL, they will work all the time. The other thing I found is the battery in the transmitter. If it's getting weaker, the flashes won't fire. I even had 3 flashes setup as slaves and ST-E2 was able to fire them all.

no, it's a cheap light triggered adapter, so there is no ETTL. It was $11 vs. $200+ for ST-E2... It fires the first time in perfect synch, but then won't fire again without turning the flash off and then back on again.

Did you have the auto off disabled?

No, not sure how to do that. Would that make a difference since it's not sitting there for long periods of time? I think I just need to buy one made for the 430EX,

Gotta love that 430x I tell you. I got the same problem with 3 different optical slaves and the eBay triggers. It is just how they are... and I can't even plug my PocketWizards to it! If I had known this, I would have gone for another flas. I have a few Nikon SB-28,s and they work like a charm. The guy at my local cam store (Henry's Photo) told me that this flash only works well with Canon stuff. Bummer!

Another problem that I have with it is that if I set my cam on Av the pics look totally blown out all the time. So much for E-TTL. I always use the flash with the camera in M mode now.

Im using a 430ex with PocketWizards with no problems other than some locations interfering with the PW... Im just using a hot shoe adapter that the 430ex sits on and plugs in to the PW. Anyway... custom functions

C.Fn-01: Auto Power Off activation: 0=on / 1=off
C.Fn-02: Slave Units auto power off time: 0=auto power off after 60min / 1=Auto power off after 10min

you can DL the PDF manual from Canon if you dont have it...
