Yah, thats the thing. Anyone can be a photographer today with the cameras we have. However, few make the cut as great photographers.

I'm sick of this crap! I don't think that anybody slows down to take the time to really understand and appreciate the creativity that went into my new found style of photographing my subject. I just thought that this challenge would be perfect because the challenge details specified "Use lighting in a creative fashion this week" and that's exactly what my entry is all about.

This is my third attempt at this type of photography in a challenge and nobody has caught on yet to how I light my subjects, even though I decided, this time, to spell it out in the title.

Or....maybe it's me. Maybe I think too much of this entry and two others in the same style in the past year and they are not as wonderful as I think they are. My last Free Study entry (my 49th challenge entry) ended up being my worst score ever and I thought that it would easily be in the top 10%. Boy, was I way off! So, again, maybe it's me that needs to have my head and judgement recalibrated.

Maybe I need to just take a break from here. I would really prefer to truly understand where it is that my expectations are so misguided.

Okay, I'm done ranting for now. Thanks for you time.

It warms the heart when someone sees the light in the same post they started to ask why they haven't seen the light ;)

Boy, you're a clever one aren't you? I'll bet that you felt a little tinge of excitement and satisfaction when you finished crafting your one-liner and hit the enter key...and then the disappointment that it wasn't perfect because you had to edit it to change "thread" to read "post". Damn, it was almost perfect.

No, I'm not seeing the light that you are implying that I am seeing. I was just backing off a little bit from my rant of sorts and toning it down a little. I don't really think that it's me.

Here's my honest opinion: It's not me. It's voters who care more about looking at pretty pictures than considering how well an entry meets a challenge that directed us to use lighting in a creative way. They just don't see it even when it's spelled out for them in the title.

It's voters who rush through all the entries in a challenge so that they can brag about voting 100% at the expense of truly judging what they barely see.

It might be voters who don't know enough to intelligently judge anything about a photo other than, again, how pretty it is. Maybe they just don't know enough to be a decent judge of photography. This is DPChallenge, a digital photography contest, not pretty picture share group.

It's what countless other threads have covered regarding the difference between 1) being able to take a good picture and/or produce a great image that tackles the challenge presented and 2) being able to produce the overprocessed, oversaturated pretty pictures that the average voter likes. I've proven that I can do both. My Rainforest blue ribbon entry was crafted to appeal to voters who don't know what they are looking at...and it worked. Not to say that many others didn't like it too, but my goal for that challenge was solely to accomplish #2 above.

Since then, I've gone back to strictly following the challenge description (mostly) and I have seriously accepted the challenge description to be a test of my ability to produce an image as assigned. Too bad for me that this is not how entries on DPChallenge are judged today.

Yeah, I see the light. Just not the light that you thought I was seeing.

The only thing I was thinking was how much I amuse myself.

Good luck in psychology school.

Stuck at 98 votes. :/ Getting a lot of views, though I have an inkling why, heh. I just hope my score stays up there, I haven't scored above a 5 since the last Flora challenge- even hit a rough spot before that one, too!!

I personally am just pissed off how crappy of the picture distorted after I re-sized.

Plus some make me just wonder "WTF" when the challenge was USE LIGHTING in a creative way...

Strange - I thought this was a challenge about "Lighting" and not about "Lights" or photos of "Lights"... can't quite understand why my image falls so far below the challenge requirements for voters right now???

Apparently I boarded the wrong train, lol.

I'm glad to get my baggage on the right one, now.

I really wish I had uploaded a different image. I got some AMAZING shots (check them out on my flickr if you're curious) this past couple of nights...just to die for views.

Not my best but I always enjoy with the score is an "even" number this far into the voting...

But that’s why I read the score threads. They attract the “voters don’t understand me sect” and the “challenge description fanatics club” makes interesting reading not to mention a good laugh as well.

Anyone who's been around this site a long time and remembers me knows that I'm probably the most liberal voter there is. I hand out 8s, 9s, 10s like they're candy. I vote as much on how much I simply like the picture as on it's technical correctness. But, going through this challenge I was sitting there with my mouth hanging open like a cod fish shaking my head thinking, "WTF?"

Heh - this has been one of the more difficult challenges to "rate" and comment on if only because the challenge subject can lead a participant to take a picture of creative lighting and not necessarily USE lighting in a creative way. I'm not sure at this point if I can really properly evaluate the images as the challenge intended. What I've been doing is evaluating the use of light on the subject matter as a point to begin and move on from there.

I have a feeling I'm going to have a headache from a tough slog before it's over. :>)

Having said that, there have been some really interesting images presented.

Tom

I got a very interesting comment, it says ' \ '
Well, it's one way of telling me I'm not good and not bad (at least I think that's what it means LOL).

ive starting voting tonight, Ive been finding it really hard, theres some great pictures, then many I dont quite understand.
the brief is "Use lighting in a creative fashion this week so that the lighting itself is a key factor in your composition"
I seem to find many that DNSTMC (donotseemtomeetchallenge)

Can people see what I wrote in my challenge entry? The description has a lot to do with the message and medium of how I chose to convey the photograph for this challenge.

Confusing comments... One being a sarcastic "where the sun REAR(end)ly shines"hole, and the other being a good comment from one who aparantly understood my photo and the challenge. I didn't expect this to do any good, but I thought that it at least would be somewhere around 5.

A very interesting challenge and one that was difficult to rate and comment on.

But it's done.

Man... I've never seen so many late low-voters. Typically the trolls are done early and my scores climb toward the end. I was as high as a 5.8xxx and have just now crossed to below 5.48xx with a rash of 5s and 4s the past couple of days.

The last two votes averaged 2.5.

odd pattern this go round.

The photograph stands alone (with the title) until voting is over. And putting too much description in your title tends to get you slammed too.

Darn...that ruins half the message for my photo. Ah well maybe people will appreciate it when the voting is done (maybe).

I'm going for a personal brown ribbon, but reading this thread perhaps it's not a real one.

And I'll echo that, a very good/lengthy comment from a 100%'er - thanks :)
