Silly request, guys! My 10 year old is fascinated with the site (he loves pushing the update button and seeing whether my entries have gone up or down.) He wants to enter a challenge, but I told him he has to be 13.

However, he did take pictures for the DPC scavenger hunt. He keeps checking back to see if anyone has commented on them. (and he just went outside now to take more pictures.)

Anyway, if you have a minute to comment on a 10 year old's pictures, please stop by dpc scavenger hunt. His shots are in a recent posting under my name.

Thanks! You'll make his day! (they can be honest opinions, he can take it.)

How will we know they're his?

Too bad DPC can't make a special area for young photographers. They could have their own challenges. Voters will know that they are the younger crowd so they can offer good instructional comments. They are the future members of DPC, let's start brainwashing..uhm, training and encouraging them now :-) They could have only certain areas where they could go so it would be safe for them to view.

He doesn't have to be 13 as long as parental consent is given in some way. There have been plenty of entries here by children much younger than 10. I'm sure one of the parents who has a child competing here can give you better information than I can.

I've seen that, but I think he's too young to be thrown to the wolves. He's not going to be competitive, so the comments that he will get probably would be very discouraging. Right now he's having such fun with it, I'd rather he did the side challenges so people know who's entering it.

Thank you so much for taking the time, everyone! He is so excited about the comments. It's wonderful that you are being supportive but still giving cropping advice, or rule of thirds. (we've talked about that, and he's really doing it now that he's gotten some comments on it!)

What a wonderful place this is!

Alternatively, you could get him a memvbership, and encourage him to participate in many of the Side Challenges. As a result, people would know who he is, and be aware of his age, therefore giving both constructive comments but sheilding him slightly.

Also means he will build his portfolio, and easily be able to look back at his images.

Just going now to see what he submitted

I suppose that could be a problem. Some people can be unnecessarily mean when they don't know whose photo they are commenting about.

I think that you should open an account (ask Mr L first though) and have his age in his user name

Aged10(whatever his name is)

10yearoldphotographer

something along those lines

I resemble that remark............ you really shouldn't call me out in public forum like this though. :p

My eight year old son recently signed up... despite my weeks of trying to convince him that it might not be such a good idea. He was persistent, and I gave in and sent an email to minor@dpchallenge.com requesting permission, and langdon was nice enough to give it provided I filled out a form.

He's only submitted once so far, but I believe he may have something for the train challenge this week. He loves having a theme to photograph to, even if he doesn't submit.

An account is an interesting idea--perhaps I'll do the free one so he can do the side challenges. We'll see how long he keeps taking pictures. I just upgraded his camera--he had the cheapest point and shoot to begin with ($40 digital from 2 years ago) and it was pretty pitiful. So I upgraded to a nicer point and shoot. At least he has some zoom capabilities and can see what he shot.

Without a portfolio its going to be hard to participate in side challenges. If he gets an allowance let him spend $5 of it a month on a membership. It will serve two purposes, he will get to enjoy DPC and he will learn the value of $$$.

My 12 year old nephew recently joined the site. Danger_Weasel. His mom and I both have his password to maintain parental supervision. Under the help menu there is a link with the e-mail address to ask for an exception.

It would be great if Kids memberships had a specific icon that identified them as such. And maybe for the challenges they could have an asterik next to the title of their entry so we can give encouraging remarks.

Also it would be cool to have under 18 challenges. I would change my DOB and still probly not Ribbon and end up in a deep depression. ok nevermind! LOL

Haha!!

Actually, when someone had a challenge idea of "child challenge". That's what I thought they meant--an under 18 challenge!

Link to thread with DPC waiver for minors text is here -- it also contains links to several other threads which discuss the participation of kids here ... basically, they are welcome to participate with parental permission, but we're unlikely to change the site in any substantial way. This is one "sport" where parents and kids can compete on an even footing.

Actually I quite like the kid icon, or asterisk thing... That way, when I get whipped by a kid I can blame it on the identifier.

Perhaps if we looked at all the images, as if there might be a child involved, we might be a bit more grown-up and positive in our comments.

Ok Langdon,
Just a small percentage will be ok, www.Dpchallengekids.com

just a thought, but why not any minors that are members, fix it so that all commentsmust be approved by a site person... kinda like on myspace where you have to allow comments to post, ya know.. same idea, only a site councel person has to allow.. just a thought at 2:00am..

My 13 years old son Connor definately prefers his photgraphs to be judged in the same way as everyone else and therefore if a child icon were
to be introduced I think it should be something that is optional as I know he would certainly object to any kind of age consideration votes.

Umm...sorry but I disagree. When I was a kid, when you competed in anything you either won or you didn't. Nowadays, every kid gets a participation ribbon and accolades tossed at them like confetti for the smallest of accomplishments.

Look at Joey Lawrence and his early stuff, from when he was 14 years old. His talent is apparent from even that age. Look at his stuff! Now, he's not even 20 and making a very decent living. But how would he have done if he'd gotten 'special treatment' for being under 18?

IMHO, and no I am not a parent, so no flames please.

But from what I have seen, as a truly single woman in her 40s, there is far too much pandering to kids these days. Parents are too ready to be their kid's best friend as opposed to authority figure. They are incredibly overcompensating, fulfilling their children's every whim, and all they are doing is teaching them entitlement and a very severe lack of appreciation. No parent I know is willing to let their kid scrape their knee or fail in any way, shape or form; yet it is those experiences that define us and teach us how to cope with the real world.

So why bring it here?

Had Joey L received nicey-nice comments all the time he was here, would he be a professional now? Or did the fact that he got his pix treated as though he were an adult help define and make him become what he is now?

Think about it.
