Several other forums in the recent future have added the feature of user selectable blocking of posts from certain people. Why is it that we can hide entire forums but not individual people? Surely this can't be that hard to implement. It sure would make things easier in the forums.

I know my recent departure was caused by forum "experts" and on my recent return I can see my stay likely won't be that long again due to more of them. Can you please add the hide user option in the forums?

It would entail a great deal more impact on the database, even if we wanted to consider the idea (again).

That sort of formalized factionalization spells the death of any community. If you don't want to read someone's post, just scroll past it -- it's not that hard to impliment.

Neither is writing the code so I don't have to scroll past it. Several forums simply hide their post in the thread to the user who requests it. Hasn't hurt any of those communities.

Paul's counterarguments considered, I'm all for the idea. I would love to block a couple of people. It is true that it's not that hard to skip their posts, but it's also more work than zero, and I like zero. And isn't Langdon working on some big upgrades? I'm sure the new stuff can handle the extra load without us noticing. :)

Well, you are free to bring up the idea for re-consideration, but AFAIK we've already discussed this and decided not to impliment this type of feature.

I would pay extra for this feature.

I would too even if it meant my posts were hidden by other people!(I'm sure I'm on a few lists myself!)

This should be a motivation for DPC to implement this feature, as it satisfies all parties; the site gets some extra income, and the users who want it badly enough get to block people.

Sometimes it isn't as easy as just scrolling past a post without responding; sometimes you can't help but see/read the post, and what it says sets you off, even if you choose not to respond.

As for a hide feature spelling "death for a community," I don't buy it - quite the opposite. It seems to me that if certain users hid each other, there would be a lot less ranting and infighting around here.

I dont know if hiding people would work. If you only heard one half of a phone conversation, you probably wouldnt be able to make complete sense of it... so what would be the point in reading a thread, if half/some of the posts were hidden?

Making it a premium feature, extra fee required would mean that only people who really value it would participate, and it wouldn't be a random thing happening every time someone got a bit annoyed, so the "fracturing" of the community concern should be lessened. It could lessen the workload for SC members, too, as fewer "Report this Post" events would occur for the repeat offenders.

It could be limited to forum posts, but could be extended to image comments, and, if it made the coding/implementation easier, I would be okay with me if it completely blocking: no profile view, no challenge entries, etc. But I suspect that would actually be more complex, and limiting it to forums/comments would probably be the critical mass of win-win for the Members willing to pay for it, and the reduced number of complaints to the SC.

I've said before, if given a limit of 10-20 such blocks, I would (so far) only use 2-3 of them :-) And it would enhance my experience here so much that I would pay an extra $25 a year for the option.

I agree completely!

Hiding the Rant Thread is not sufficient to avoid the problems, and being limited to ignoring an entire thread is too much of a scorched earth response--I lose value that I pay for because I miss the rest of the contributions, or have to attempt to wade thru the muck--simple to say "just scroll past" but in practice this does not work well.

You're a time traveler now? Decent trick! :-)

Anyhow, hiding posts from certain users won't necessarily help as long as their entire posts continue to be fully quoted by other users!

You didn't know my connection to the time-space Continuum? Man where have you been? In the past? LOL

In the time they have added it to the other forum I frequent I have only added two people, but those two would keep me from visiting and commenting on posts I would have otherwise engage in, because of their attitudes and ego's. Its much nicer now. There are only a few here I'd like to hide, but doing so would make my smile last much longer into the day.

I agree. Additionally, you'd only be getting pieces of some "conversations" when just parts of quotes are used in a reply post.

That is the great thing about the feature..........its optional and you don't have to use it, but those that want too and understand what might/might not be shown in a thread.

Perhaps our user Preferences could be expanded to display forum posts in either normal reverse, or random order ... ;-)

My unofficial thoughts --

At the sites where I have been that allowed you to block certain users, people still sought them out. For example, if user A blocked user B, user B continued on his/her course, and user A *still* responded to user B either due to quotes or just actively seeking them out.

The other thought I had is that I would rather exercise self-constraint. If someone pushes my buttons (and there are a couple of users that do), I just try to ignore them on my own. If they are constantly posting in a thread I am participating in, I don't respond to them. I'm trying really diligently to break myself of being that little guy in the cartoon that says, "GO to bed? I can't! Someone is WRONG on the Internet."

All that said, yes, it would convenient to block people, and I have wanted that particular feature at times, but I think if there is more than two people on any given forum that you need to block, it may be time for some personal introspection about how you react to people that you don't know.

Seems like all of us have 2-3 people we want to block, and that's it. I suppose if we can't get a block feature, we should at least get together and vote them off the island :-)

The arguments against a block feature all seem to hinge on the same thing: if we just used some self-restraint, or chose to ignore the people who irk us, that should be good enough. It's a valid argument in a perfect world - but we all know that sometimes we just can't resist the urge to say something, even when we know we shouldn't.

This is why having a block/hide feature would work better. I don't have a personal stake in this; I can only come up with one person I'd use it on. And that's a user who isn't even openly obnoxious, their personality just grates on me.

My interest in adding my $.02 in favor of this is more because, like I said before, I think it would lower the number of threads that get ugly. And personally, I think there were more of those this winter than usual. If you never saw a post/thread in the first place, there'd be no temptation to overcome your reserve and say something.
