WTF.

You had my proof for 6 days. You DQ me 5 mins after the challenge ends.

WTF.

hope they get it figured out Mav. It was a great shot.

that really sucks. you really deserve second place, especially since you didn't break any of the rules.

I'm hoping.

Labuda - it was the snail race one - "100 yard 'dash'"

oh man, that one was a hot shto! I scored it a ten. But if the EXIF info is not on point then you're out of luck regardless of what is common sense. Thats too bad. If any shot deserved the ribbon, it was that one.

We had been discussing the image. Final site council votes came in, and the vote was DQ at the close of the challenge. The challenge switchover and the DQ I belive were happening at the same time. Usually we like for the DQs to happen before results are posted, unfortunately it was a minute too slow tonight. Sorry.
05/05/2004 12:23:12 AM · #9
That was poor on the part of the site council. Sorry Mav... it should have been handled before the challenge ended.

So Mavrik, that was an actual shot of a snail out in full body with head up? HOLY CRAP!!! Most excellent! I worked with snails for 2 years and never was able to get a shot like that! I saw your proof, SC should reinstate your shot and remember to ALWAYS DOUBLE/TRIPLE check the dates on your camera!

That really is an excellent shot, hope you repost it so I can make it a fav

can we see it? and ofcourse why whas it DQ'd?
05/05/2004 12:24:19 AM · #12
if people want to see the image, i managed to save it in my favorites before the DQ. Somehow it is still there. Well you can not click on it but the thumb is there.

Anyway M, thinking before about quitting here for good, and I think after seeing what has happened to you, my mind is made up.
05/05/2004 12:24:39 AM · #13
Weird... I saw the image for a second and then it was gone. I didn't get to take a close look at it, just the thumbnail.

I'm confused: 1) Mavrik, said in the other thread that he posted the original in his Portfolio, but I can't find it. And 2) WHY was the image DQ'd? There's no clue given as to why.

Mavrik, please post your original. Did you do heavy editing or something?
05/05/2004 12:25:57 AM · #14
When it happened sucked. Yep.

Not to mention that I submit to them the images from my "6/24/04" romp (my wrong in cam date) that showed where I was 6/24/04! (a receipt in my portfolio dated 4/27 - in the challenge dates at a location that my "Where you Live" was taken).

..., forget it. Logic is beyond this, I guess.

EXIF dates were not valid for the challenge period. A majority of the SC vote to enforce the rules as written (emphasis added):

To avoid the possibility of disqualification, be sure to check that the date and time on your camera are set correctly before taking any pictures you may use as challenge entries. We will no longer accept this an excuse. You have been forewarned.

I'll post the original when I'm done here. My exif data said the wrong date. When I said my portfolio, I mean those receipts etc. I clearly took the shot 4/27 - that's the point.

I was one of the site members who voted DQ. It is an awesome shot. And the EXIF was obviously a camera error. So, my "common sense" should have told me to vote "no dq," right? No. My common sense says that the date on the camera is the responsibility of the photographer. My common sense dictates that it is an imperative to be fair to the others (several in recent weeks) who have been dq'ed on the same grounds, and equally as "obvious" (one was dated before the camera was even made).

So many of our dq efforts are subjective, in a lot of ways. To me, this is one area of either black or white.

Mavrik, I am truly sorry this happened to you. It is an awesome shot, and nothing can change that.

If it was gonna happen, it should have happened before the challenge ended.

First, please accept our apologies for the late action on our decision. As the vote was running rather close, our intention was to wait until about 5 minutes before midnight to give all the members of Site Council an opportunity to finalize their votes. In the meantime, Drew and I were working on another project for the site, and next thing we knew, the results were calculating, and then posted. The DQ was done at 12:01 AM.

The final decision to disqualify was based upon the EXIF date for the image being outside the challenge dates. The majority decision was to enforce the EXIF rule as written.

Again, please accept our apologies. It was our intention to finalize the decision before the results were calculated.

Misfortunate Mavrik.
Sorry for your loss.
I'm not suggesting you shouldn't be upset.
However, I do suggest you temper your language because of the kids on the site.

Ack the "wrong date setting" problem again. I'd be pissed off too if that happened to me, but, I'd be pissed off at myself. :( The SC has to enforce this no matter what because... you know why.
05/05/2004 12:34:55 AM · #22
there are two problems here:
1) was the date on exif file between challenge entry dates
if it wasnt the rules pretty clearly states that that is a solid ground for DQ.

2)why the picture wasnt removed before the challenge ended

if there is a rule that says DQed images should be removed before results and if this was failed. than the picture should be reinstated because a rule of conduct was broken by site council.. because mavrick made a human condition mistake by not checkin his exif date.. and site council made a human mistake by not being able to process DQ before the results.. this should only be true if there is a clear rule that says DQs should be processed before the results..

and i think these are the main issue here... becasue everyonem makes mistakes and mavrick did and Site Council did too... so i think it is up to the common sense in this point...

Unfortunate timing for sure, but I have to give the site council a pat on the back on this one.

The rules specifically state about the date being set in camera, and cleary states that the photo will be DQed.

The unfortunate thing is that there were any members of the Site Council that voted to not DQ based on a rule that has been enforced in the past and is clearly spelled out in the rules.

Awesome photo, unfortunate circumstance.

Yes John, you mentioned that. Thanks. I also stated that it was a mistake that it was happening at the same time switchover was happening and unfortunately switchover happened first. I apologized for this. Sorry if you can't accept it.

Go back to those threads - I said that other D70 decision was asinine as well. Even that is distinguishable. The pic COULD have been taken outside of the challenge dates. I gave you guys 3 pics that "proved" mine was not. This was a cam/user error but one for which you had PROOF (which I'm posting to portfolio now).

It's ridiculous.

Seriously, it is.
