I was watching Brad Pitt - Jesse James movie a week or so back and still cannot get over the photography in it. If you have not seen - watch even without the sound. Just amazing!! Large bits of the movie would stand as stills and a few minutes would make just amazing images stand alone.

So - What other movies do you suggest in the same ball park?

I'm always amazing at Fiddler on the Roof--I think the scenes are truly incredible.

I second chromey on No Country for Old Men. I was gasping at every scene. Pure brilliance.

Anything Hitchcock!

Have to add Old Men.... Yeah I have see basically most of what Hitchcock put out but this JJ movie was just amazing... I am likely to buy it - not because of the story which was so so IMO but the imagery. Have not seen Fiddler since a kid, have to rewatch.

A landscape photographer has to be in love with LoTR trilogy, of course...

Okay... Just added a few things to my netflix queue.... Thanx

Apart from the LOTR's since I can see them on my shelf. I have been threatening to have a LOTR day and play the 3 extended versions end on end... but it's a good chunk of the day and the kids & other half just don't get the attraction like I do :-)

The later Harry Potter movies have some amazing stills.

Another movie that stands out for me is Full Metal Jacket.

Really... I thought that Apocalypse Now had some more interesting cinematography.

I haven't seen that one in a long time, but I also wasn't aware that it was a contest :)

Haha, sorry. I didn't mean to make it sound like I was trying to argue with you or anything. Just saying what I was thinking.

P.S. I win

It's not a movie, but does anyone else here watch the UK motoring show 'Top Gear'? I am always blown away by the cinematography. The fact that they film in some spectacular locations (Iceland, Swiss Alps, Ireland etc) from time to time is a big help, but I reckon they must sit around for hours waiting for just the right light, the right cloud formations etc. Whoever is responsible for it all is wasted on a motoring show.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Romeo + Juliet
Amelie
Dances With Wolves
The Shawshank Redemption

...of the top of my head.

Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, Francis Ford Coppola's One From the Heart, just to name a few...

In a nutshell, great directors usually work with great cinematographers.
