I went on a chimney fire today and it took us almost two hours to finally get it out completely. The home owner supposedly cleaned his chimney the day before. We think he just knocked some stuff loose and today it caught fire. We ended up removing 13 buckets of crud from his basement clean-out.

I'm tired, sore, and smell like a chimney (even after taking a shower). I'd have more photo's, but I spent most of my time at the end of the ladder truck trying to knock crud off the inside of the chimney with a really heavy weight and chain.

When hubby was a volunteer firefighter we knew that we'd never have a Christmas day to ourselves. There would be probably half a dozen chimney fire calls from people burning their wrappings in the fireplace.

Combine uncleaned chimneys with burning paper being sucked up the flue and it's inevitable.

Maybe places need bylaws that proof of cleaning by a professional within the past year be provided in the case of a chimney fire, otherwise the resident is charged a fee? Firefighters should not be having to be chimney sweeps as well.

You know the funny thing...the guy said HE cleaned it the day before. To prove it he brought out his chimney brush. While we were there he went on the roof (by his own ladder, we wouldn't let him use ours) and used the brush again. I'm hoping that he'll hire someone next year.

We've been warned that there will probably be a lot of chimney fires in the future from people converting to wood stoves and using "green" wood instead of properly dried wood. *sigh*

The biggest problem is with people who don't know what they're doing. They use green wood, softwoods like pine, and don't know enough to get the flue good and hot every now and then.

A guy I used to work for heated the shop with wood and we'd burn all kinds of nasty stuff, including phone poles and railroad ties. Every now and then we'd really stoke it up to clean the creosote out and the stovepipe would get cherry red.

Gotta know what you're doing, and have a good insulated section going through the roof to get away with those kind of shenannigans, though!

Here in Alaska, most people have wood stoves or fireplaces - at least as a back up to their Toyo Stoves or furnaces. The firefighter put out hundreds of chimney fires each winter.

we have a log burner and have our Flue cleaned every 12 months,as our insurance policy requires this. So people check your house insurance policies and make sure you
know how often they need cleaning,Insurers are quick to not pay out if your flue is outside their time frames .....
We use a qualified chimney sweep

I've noticed that in a couple of threads of late. At least this one's on topic albeit from someone invisible.
