just curious what others think of this photo - it's one of two i took last night out side on the back porch. i'm fairly happy with it. but what do i know ;}

Hope u don't mind my feedback
what i dont like is -:
1)how width of snap is bigger than lenght
2) I am assuming camera was below eye level and has caused lower face to bigger than forehead regio, i.e there is distortion
05/01/2004 11:41:07 AM · #3
its not distorted - the shot was taken straight on with a telephoto lense. i think its just the fact she is biting the tortilla chip.

not sure what you mean about the length and width. this is a standard 35mm ratio. 8x12, 10x15, 16x24...

every photo i take with the rebel is in this ratio...

no - i don't mind your feed back - that's why i posted it in this public forum ;}

Well, I kinda like it. I like the negative space on the right. I like the expression on the model's face. I like the lighting.
05/01/2004 11:44:36 AM · #5
the biggest issue i have with photos of people is the glare from the sweat on their faces. to help with that i try to take advantage of natural light if possible to avoid using the flash - and still get the glint in the eyes.

if i was shooting studio shots i could probably make them wash up, or where makeup to keep the glare to a minimum - but most of my people shots are in a natural setting, and candid...

I think he is refferring to the way you shot it as a landscape view and not in a portrait view.

ahh - but thats a key part of the composition. was trying to do somewhat of an advertisement type shot. and i wanted the negative space.

the 1st thing my girlfriend said about it - w/o my input was ' it looks like an ad' so i must have come close to my goal...

Soup,

My observations:

You got a good exposure for the most part. I like the skintone on the left side of the photo as well as the tone on the hand. Because of the size of the subject's cheeks you get a little shadow in there. You also pickup a little shadow on the model's left eye (assuming you haven't flipped the photo). I'd suggest selectively copying the green channel for those areas that are darker and pasting them into another layer with a Screen blend at something like 15% or maybe 25% to lighten up those areas.
If you'll notice I have no problem with this but you might hear that you have hair across the subject's eyes and apparently some people find that distracting. Just mentioning it 'cause I hear that a lot.
The only distraction or thing I'd consider changing and reshooting would be the bandaid on the pinky finger. The whole shot has a natural feel. The bandage just doesn't seem to fit. I know it was natural, spur-of-the-moment type shot (at least that's the feel that you seem to have conveyed) but just removing that one distracting element could help reinforce the natural atmosphere.

All-in-all, I like the composition, I like the horizontal capture you chose, I like the model's expression and your exposure of the shot.

thanks ;}

i will give the channel deal a shot - for the shadows when i get home.
and yeah i agree about the bandaid, but there wasnt too much i could have done - besided ahving her eat with the other hand - but it was a spur of the moment shot - not set up so...

the original exposure was somwhat flat - and before i converted to BW - i deepened the shadows, and selectively removed the black and yellow from the whites. i then used digidaan's BW conversion action. and then a slight curves adjustment to add some contrast - i then flattened the layers, and dodged the whites of the eyes a tad. all in all it was a 5 minute process i did before work this morning.

thanks for the comments

These types of shots are my absolute favorite! I think it is a tad dark and have messed with it a bit in PSCS taking shadows out and bumping contrast just a tad. I'll take it down in awhile never leave others people's work up too long out of respect for the photographer
great shot
or with catchlights (i need work on adding these lol)
catchlights

you're edits look pretty good. i was trying to compromise between a lighter look -w more visible skin blemishes, and a darker look hiding the blemishes a bit better.

thanks for the effort - i might play with it a bit more when i have some more time.

I really feel its a wonderful shot. I dont think there is much you can do, its great as is.

Very candid, very clear and very pretty girl. Great photo.

It looks great, and I think the space really makes the picture.
Randy's versions are pretty good alternatives depending on what you like,
Paul.

I liked it a lot better the first time. In fact, many of the things other people didn't like are exactly what I like - the perspective, the negative space, the orientation, and the darkness on her eye. I really like this shot. The only thing that I don't like at all is the band-aid.
05/02/2004 12:10:37 PM · #17
yeah - i still like the 1st one better. and i think i will try to clone out the band aid...

then i will post the original

thanks ;}

Just tossing in my 2 cents. I can see some appeal in the first one but I like the most recent edits you applied. Either way its a good shot. Thanks for sharing the original and the edited versions.
