I am a bit new to the site and I wanted to check and see if it is appropriate to vote in a challenge that you are entered in? I would hope that I would not be biased, but since I have a horse in the race I don't know if I should chance it.

Thanks for your input.

Some people do and some people don't. I tend to have an interest in the subjects I have an entry in. I want to see what creative ideas others have done and I don't feel it biases me any. Others here will not vote in a challenge they are in. You pretty much have to choose your own policy, but if you feel it will bias you, then it is best to sit out.

Vote. Just make sure you score everything else down to make yourself feel better.

Yes, I am joking.

Yes, I also think it explains all the 1s and 2s knocking about.

I have made it a practice not to vote in the challenges that I am in.

Although I have decided now not to enter the mainstream challenges for a while as they were killing my creativity.

Plus what everybody said below.

I also don't vote on challenges I'm in, I did once and I actually found I was thinking twice about giving out high scores, so I decided then I would only vote where I didn't have an entry to prevent myself being biased.

Thanks everyone. That helps a lot. I think for the time being I will sit out on voting, test the waters a bit more before I decide for sure.

Why don't you go ahead and vote in the challenge you are not entered in? Might as well at least get your feet wet!

It explains a few of the 1s and 2s. Clearly not all.

I don't give many 1s or 2s but there are some photos that are obvious that absolutely no time or effort were put into them. IMO these deserve a 1-3 rating. If it really looks like the person tried and put forth some kind of effort then I usually won't go under a 4 when voting. And that's how I do it.

..."effort" has nothing to do with how good a photograph is...someone can spend hours on a picture and it still might suck. No brownie points from me if it looked like someone put in "effort" and time...where does decisive moment fit into that sort of reasoning? A fruitless journey is a fruitless journey. Most important to me, is how does it make me feel. My vote, my criteria...to each their own.

I've actually never given lower than a 3. I figure that if a photo is bad, 3 is below average, and enough below average to make my point. If it really, really stinks, I'm wondering if they put it in to go for a brown ribbon--so why reward it?

My personal best image was taken and submitted about 5 minutes to rollover. :)

Not much effort, but good scores.

an individual's impact on voting is negligible... and I pretty much ONLY vote in challenges I participate in, and I have no reservations dishing out high scores to shots I think are really good. I agree with YoSpiff, I really like seeing other people's take on the topic that I shot as well, and I enjoy commenting and voting on them. I also try to be extra aware of potential bias and trust myself to be as impartial as I can be, but again, my impact is not large

I am always biased when I vote (let's admit it!). But I don't think that I am much more biased when I entered the challenge. Except when I have to vote on a picture which has the same concept than mine, then I abstain.

Looking closely at all the other entries can inform your thinking about your own entry and can improve your future images. Just as voting lets you see the large version of each entry, so does commenting. When you enter a non-free-study challenge, your thought process and effort give you an informed perspective that may help your comments be more specific. Leaving a comment gives you an opportunity to study an image in more detail: helpful process for you and better comments to help fellow photographers. Consider commenting and then clicking the directional buttion (instead of clicking number score buttions) whenever you feel cautious about leaving a numeric score.

Ok, thanks bob350that is some really good advice. I didn't realize that you could comment without voting. That seems like an interesting approach to stay cautious. I have voted/commented in the challenge I am not entered in. Thanks again everyone.

I also vote almost exclusively on challenges I enter.

My view is that time spent voting on my image (and some comments) is worth a response.

When I receive a comment, I always try to respond with a similarly positive or helpful comment to the person who gave it.

I am asking time from others to view and review my work, so it's only fair that I put some of my own time back into it.

If I have the time, my goal is always to try to get 50% votes and 20% comments or at least maintain that ratio. I have met with varying success on that point.

Further, as someone who has put a photo up for public view and review, I am actually hoping that people will put MORE time into voting and viewing my picture, and I feel that people who have also shot for the same challenge will be the ones most likely to do that. They will already have a deeper viewpoint than a casual viewer who has only dwelled on the meaning of the challenge for a few brief moments.

Now as to a bias... I don't really think that the general populace is that petty. Yeah, it happens a bit, but there are other reasons that I might feel are dumb that people might want to lowball their vote. I can live with that.

For me as a voter, if I am unable to view an image objectively, then how the heck am I going to be able to critique my own pics? I start my voting by carefully considering what my vote for my own image would be. I like to revisit it periodically to see if I still think it merits that score. This gives me a frame of reference to double check if I really am voting in a biased way or of any comparison that I might make to a 'similar' image is balanced or not.

I mean if I can't vote objectively, then why bother wasting my time voting at all. It would do me no good to vote like that and it doesn't do anyone else any good either.
