Hi dpchallengers,

im a big fan of this website and was wondering if it would be possible to do an album cover challenge by any chance? i have a dear friend who just finished recording his album with famous producer Matt Wallace (Faith No More, Maroon 5..) and they are in a desperate need of a good cover. the title of the album is To The Rest Of The World, the guys are london based ..for those who are interested check album preview at myspace.com/trailpreview, their original myspace is myspace.com/trail music

i would appreciate any information on this, we have sent an email to the administrator of the website but got no reply. there is an interesting story behind their funding of the album, its basically done by people who invest their money in the bands they like trough a website so the whole project was strongly supported by fans and promises success.

Thank you for your time

So, you want a challenge where we make an album cover for your friend's band?

You could do a side challenge.

That is probably still your best bet. However, I suspect that even if there was a "To The Rest Of The World" challenge, there will be other issues to consider. The fact is that the photos are owned by the photographer. Granting usage rights is not something that could be done by DPC administration.

You might be better off just asking if anyone would like to create an image for donation, and let us know up front what the parameters are.

It wouldn't work as a Challenge because they may or may not like the winners chosen by the site. So, it would be strange if the 38th Place entry was chosen for the cover. If they agree to use one of the winners and no other images in the Challenge, then it could work.

A side Challenge might work. Post the music, describe the band, their message etc., the style of the image they may have in mind and maybe people will shoot and post some options.

Good Luck.

thanks a lot for your words of advice. the main reason for being here is not to try to get a cover for free but to try to get something really special and original. when i showed the guys dpchallenge website, they were blown away by the quality and the amount of effort and work thats put behind some photos, so even if they end up needing to pay for it (the rights etc), they would understand.

im sure the guys would like to have the last word on the selection, what do you think about restricting their choice on the top 5? would that work in the challenge? that way there might be 2 winners in the top 5 which could motivate people even more.

i havent heard about side challenge, will go and look for it now to see whats it about.

thanks a lot once more

Actually, Steve (pawdrix) wasn't speaking officially, just his opinion. Sure, it might be a little weird if the band chose something that wasn't a top vote-getter in the challenge, but ultimately wouldn't it be their perogative to choose what they wanted or even reject all the DPC entries altogether?

I'm thinking you might just put this under Stock Photography and make it a straight commercial request, since I think the band should pay something for an album cover.

Describe what you want, what you're willing to pay, and see how many people are willing to create something on the chance their "entry" will be chosen.

You also might look at this site I just came across today, which seems to sponsor exactly the kind of "contests" you're needing:

hi citymars,

yes, ultimately i think if the guys dont find what they looking for the winner still gets the ribbon and it would still be another challenge for them just with an extra layer. its another thing if the theme is not good enough for a challenge, that i dont know. its just an idea at the end of the day

GeneralE, thank you for your advice, i will check this website, although its not a problem to find people to do it for money..i just like dpchallenge. i find people more creative when they are not motivated with money, thats the beauty of this website. as i said before, guys wouldnt mind paying so lets not focus on that. i think having your artwork signature next to matt wallace's is a cool thing, so i hope some of the people realize the opportunity and dont analyze it in a bad way, i would really be happy to have someone from here doing it hopefully trough a challenge.

thanks :)

btw. side challenges look great as well...any other difference except there are no ribbons as a prize?

also, just thinking out loud, there are probably lots of photos already made that would be great for the cover, but how to find them without going trough thousands of photos first?

I think that you're just trying to milk the site for a free cover. There are tons of creative and talented artists throughout DPC, but creating a challenge for the benefit of your friend's band is outright selfish. What you should do, is have the band look through DPC and find a style that best fits their taste, contact that artist and see if they're interested. Having a challenge is straight up lazy and having it under the guise "...having your artwork signature next to matt wallace's is a cool thing, so i hope some of the people realize the opportunity..." is crap. I've worked with clients like A.D.I.D.A.S., Footlocker, Runner's World, and Newsweek to name a few(not bragging, proving a point). Not for the oooo's and aaaah's, but for MONEY. It's work and should be compensated as much. It's people like you Martina_Velika and that attitude that makes it hard for people like me to run a business of photography and design. Everyone wants something for free...

P.S. I just checked record sales and awards for Maroon 5 and with a famous producer having their back, money shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for your opinion molinski4611. How lucky it is that others on this forum are less cynical and jaded by those little green bills! You are clearly not the kind of DPC member i expect to participate, nobody is forcing anybody here :) Those that want to enter will, those that don't wont.

Perhaps, however, there are others (who have actually read this thread) and seen that this band actually has very little money for anything right now and see that I am calling upon creatives who are less driven by those rewards. (Their producer worked for rock bottom wages taking a chance on the music he heard).

i also stated clearly that money could be paid but shouldnt be the motivator behind the challenge, creativity should. It's people like YOU whose bitter and arrogant tone casts shadows over an innocent forum enquiries. Anyway this has been a very positive and useful discussion until now so no point discussing it further with you.

thanks for those who messaged me, i will organize a side challenge in a couple of days

As I see it, Martina_Velika hasn't done anything wrong here. You two have.

11. Do not attack other users. This includes "calling out" specific comments or commenters in a hostile manner. Personal attacks are never appropriate in a constructive discussion. If you disagree with another participant, address their points without attacking them personally. Be aware that others may have differing opinions of a personal attack, so use care when posting. Please note that this includes publicly "calling out" commenters (whether by name or not) in a hostile way.

12. Do not bait or provoke other users. This does not promote civil discussion and will not be tolerated.

Thank you, Mick! You are absolutely correct!

I look forward to seeing the details of the side challenge, and may just get motivated to find something to contribute myself.

It would kick some ass to have an image as an album cover out there. Bragging rights! lol.

Well, I'd disagree on the details but your basic point is well taken. I'll just apologize and leave it at that.

Well, as L2 kindly pointed out, it's not my business to be telling you guys your business, so I apologize to you both. :)
