There is a small switch on the side of the card. Slide it over. Sometimes that switch can get accidentally slid when inserting the card.

Spiffy beat me to it. There's a write-protect tab/switch on a lot of cards (maybe all, I donno) that works just like the one we used to have on the 3.5" floppies, so's to prevent accidental overwrite of important data. Gawd those were the days, when the floppy floppies gave way to thye hard floppies and all was right with the world :-)

R.

ETA: seems this is a common problem, here's a discussion on how to keep it from happening again.

You actually MISS floppy disks? Not here. I love my flashdrives. I just built my first PC without a floppy drive and the only reason the last one had a floppy was because it was on hand.

Like the others said, check the lock tab on the card. If you download using a card reader built in to a laptop, these sometimes automatically lock the content when you insert the card, I know my Acer does this. So, I either unlock it or use a Sandisk Micromate card reader that came free with my 4Gb SDHC Extreme III card.

Hope this helps:)

i hated how those 5 1/4" disks bent and got corrupted - i couldn't tell you how many games i never finished because 3/4 thru the damn thing would sh!t the bed... ;)

i noticed you have a D50... is it an SDHC card? (they are 4gb and up SD cards) D50's don't work with SDHC cards, they only work with a MAX size of 2gb SD cards (4gb and up SD cards are the same shape, they will fit in... but they are called SDHC card and they don't work with the D50)...

look into that...

What if it is not LOCK on the side?? I have a external hard drive but its a hassle carrying it around sometimes...I just wanted to save the image on the card on my LAPTOP!

No lock button on the side? That's odd. Maybe it broke off? Big SD cards are dirt cheap now. If that one has a problem, it might just be better to buy a new one.

Never seen an SD card without lock, perhaps you have a cheapo forgery??

Check if your laptop locks the card to prevent erasing your photos.

The SD card is not locked! Do I need to change a setting in the camera? Or my laptop maybe??
01/30/2009 07:37:13 PM · #12
Why are you trying to save the image on the SD card anyway? It's may be possible that your camera is doing something to it, but you should still be able to copy files off of it. Perhaps a USB flash drive would do the job for you. Again, like SD cards, they are dirt cheap. You can pick up 4 Gigabytes on sale for about $10-15 now.

Can you detail exactly what your problem is here? I think some lines are getting crossed in the communication and you seem to have contradicted yourself.

Are you having trouble taking a photo and having it save on your SD card in the camera, or are you having trouble copying your images from the SD card to your computer, or are you having trouble saving images from your computer onto your SD card?

Detail your problem and the steps you are using that create that problem please!

OK.. When I work on an image from my sd cARD ON MY COMPUTER, When I try to save that image to the sd card, it says that the f drive is write protected, and it refuses to let me save that image to my sd card.

If you don't have that physical switch on the side, then I am at a loss. If the camera can write to it, then the computer should be able to. Are you trying to overwrite the original image? If that is what you are doing then the file itself is likely set as read-only. Why do you need to save the edited pic on the flashcard anyway? I would suggest putting it on the hard disk or perhaps a flashdrive if it needs to be portable.

Anyone had a problem where you go to download your photos and it comes up with "invalid image " message. I think my card is corrupt, what do you think ? How long are these cards suppose to last?

Until they fail. They do have a design life with a certain number of write cycles, but it should take a very long time to wear them out to that point. Sounds like you may have a premature failure. Big SD cards are cheap, though.

Try renaming the image.

Try formatting the card each time you've downloaded your images, not just deleting them. You might also like to have a look at the Pentax website and see if there are any firmware updates available for your K-x. I'd been having a similar problem with my K20 and discovered there was a firmware update to improve the writing of images to SD HC cards. But like Spiff said, it could also be that it's time for a new card.

I threw it out, like Yo-spiff said they are cheap. A photographer friend of mine said that she formats her card after a big shoot. But i read thats a quick way to ruin it, is that true ?
08/13/2011 09:00:16 AM · #21
I always format a card after I take what I want off of it. Start fresh. Never want to reach in the bag and pull out a 1/2 full card. And have never had one wear out yet. And if one does go bad, they are pretty cheap. 8 gig card for $20? Not bad.

I have been formatting my cards to erase them since 2003, when a card that I had been merely erasing failed on me at the end of a trip to the Johnson Space Center and I lost all my photos.
