Does anyone know of any way to catalog photos so that you can give each one keywords, like a stock website does. I am starting to get a sizeable library of photos, and I would like to be able to search for them by keywords, for instance, 'blue' or 'water' or 'nature' etc... I don't mean putting them in folders with labels either, since one photo could have multiple keywords. Is there software available for this?

Photoimpact 7 comes with a great album feature that does just what you are asking.

So does Adobe Photoshop Album.

If I'm not mistaken Adobe Album stores the data in a database and does not actually write to the IPTC data in the file. That may pose a problem if the database becomes corrupt or if you decide to you want a different solution for your photos.

I would look for a solution that appends the information to the file so that the information is more application independent.

ACDSee 6.0 is pretty great for that. If you ONLY want keywords, MetaFile from the MetaServer pack is what a lot of pros use.

I use a program called Foto Album 3 in the summers while I'm shooting for a sports camp website. Adding the keywords makes it a ton easier to find images from specific sports and age groups.

I got a free copy off download.com. I'm not able to find it on there now, but the developers website has a free and a pro version. It looks like you have to register w/ their site to get the free version.

Edit: I'm wrong, it looks like you can only download the pro version w/ a free 21 day Trial. I did find a site that appears to have a downloadable version of the older file thats free, but its in Spanish. I'm not sure which language the program would be in. //www.calshop.biz/foto_time_album.html

I think I still have a copy of the setup file I used somewhere.

If you are using a recent MS operating system (such as WinXP), there is a built in keyword search that will not cost any extra. Right-click on the image file, Properties, Summary tab, and fill in any information you wish including keywords in the keywords field (space seperated).

Then to search by keyword, open Start Menu/Search and enter the keywords you want to find in the 'Word or phrase in file..' text box.

Admittedly it is not geared specifically toward images, but it will do what you requested without any additional investment (provided you already use the MS OS).

Unfortunately though, only iPhoto is integrated with the iLife apps...

This is great, I think I will do this for now, and once I get a few more bucks, I'll invest in the more professional software, if I even need it. Thanks!

Just be aware that you aren't actually storing the keywords with the photo. If you need to reinstall the OS or have corruption you'll have to rebuild your keywords again. Also if you choose to pursue a more comprehensive solution you'll again have to recreate all the keywords.

I only know about these guys because they're in the town where I live:

I just tried ACDSee 6.0, and because I use CD-RWs to store my image files, this application is not appropriate for me. Their workaround is to copy the files back to hard disk, then catalog the files, the use the built-in create CD option. At 50+ CDs, I said "forget that!".

I found IMatch at //www.photools.com. Has anyone ever used that, and can you comment?

oooops - edited the URL.

There isn't a synchronize type of thing with it. iView has synchronize and puts everything into the metadata. Get a Mac

I use Extensis Portfolio, has keyword searches, stores to cd, resynchronisation, searches for moved originals, just about every feature you could ever want.
