I shot my first session with a real model today. Found her on Model Mayhem, and she was totally professional, beautiful, and just amazing to work with. I learned so much today and got an insane amount of great shots. I'd show you some, but they might be good enough for Free Study this month :D

Just needed to get it off my mind, and to say to you all--if you can, stop shooting your friends and do a TFCD--it's an amazing experience (if you get a good one, at least...).

I got 500 shots, and so many of them are so good I'll be holed up editing for at least a week :D

Cool! I've always been a too shy to go for it, but my family and friends really have been shot to death. Err, via dSLR, that is.

Congratulations. I am jealous of all who are able to get models off those sites...unfortunately I live in too remote an area to be included on those sites.

That's absolutely tragic whether it's by dSLR or gun. The death part, that is. But yeah, I know it can be really intimidating the first time, but Nike's on to something when they say Just Do It. I let my model know in the e-mail that this was my first time with a real model, and it actually put her at ease in a way--I wasn't just some stuck-up jerk who thinks he's God's gift to photography (that's what it made her think, at least... >:D). So yeah, just be honest, relaxed, and spontaneous--spend the day experimenting with the whole thing.

And Judi, it seems you're doing pretty well without MM :D

The setup was mainly my in-home studio--I have two backdrops, one super white, one evergreen. I played around with my two flashes (sb-600 and 900, fired remotely with Nikon's awesome on-camera commander and the SG-3IR) and various gels/light shapers (had some fun with my horrible DIY ringlight). The model showed up by herself, no escort (is that what mua means?). She had the most amazing wardrobe--insane high-fashion stuff that was just a blast to work with.

Once we were done in the studio, we took some awesome shots out under a freeway in L.A.

I don't know if I'm going to be able to resist showing you guys the results...Maybe when I'm done editing I'll put up a few. She had the most amazing eyes...

What's a TFCD?

And share. C'mon, you know you wanna!
01/18/2009 05:51:09 AM · #8
TFCD = Time for CD... as far as I know... you pay the model by giving him/her a CD of the work from the session... any objections to that definition?

I look forward to these shots! This is something I hope to do myself soon!

A MUA is a make up artist. I just had my 3rd model shoot from MM, I only got brave enough to go for it a couple of weeks ago it is awesomely good fun isn't it :D I'm learning a lot!

Congratulations, Zack! It's always fun when a push out of the comfort zone pays off, huh? :)

Oh, I want to share alright. And I will. Maybe when I figure out what's going in the challenges I'll put up the ones that are different. And then next month I'll put up the rest if you're still interested.

The model was her own MUA--multi-talented, this one. I think she spoiled me, I'll never be able to work with any model less versatile.

And Ralph, I know what you mean by stigma--so many photogs on MM are just creepers and it's terrifying to think you might come off that way--I was totally talking myself in circles 'till she told me to relax, I was okay :D

Since you all asked so nicely (I assume this means I'll be getting massive amounts of comments :P) I put up the shots that definitely won't be used in a challenge. You still might recognize the model, but at least the style will be different and unexpected.

There are a few more, but they're the best, so I'm keeping 'em secret for this month's FS.

Let me know if you have any questions regarding setup, PP, originals requests, etc. I'm really happy with the way they turned out, but if you're not, I really want to know (and why of course).

Bump for the evening crowd...
01/19/2009 01:11:56 PM · #16
One more bump-- come on, you guys wanted to see them so bad and now you have nothing to say?
01/19/2009 01:17:17 PM · #17
will comment later--caught me at a site-down time on Sunday, next available time for me may be a couple days. Think others might have been watching playoffs and inauguration coverage... :-)

Hope you paid her with some food! :)
01/19/2009 01:41:14 PM · #19
I tried my damnedest to feed her, but she politely refused. Lol that was my moms reaction. "she's very pretty but I want to have her over for a few weeks' worth of DeZon family meals."

01/19/2009 01:51:46 PM · #20
I will carbo-load on her behalf (curse the pizza delivery on speed dial, curse it I say)
01/19/2009 01:58:02 PM · #21
I'll probably be working with her again soon, so I'll let you know if it works :P

I think they look great, I really like them! The style of the photos and pp is very fitting of the look of the model, IMO. Well done and very professional. Congrats!

Thanks a lot, Slippy!

Well you have every reason to boast, these are fabulous images and as a first time model she's got alot of potential! My fave is the 3rd one it really emphasis her amazing bone structure

Those look great - I'd be really happy if I'd taken them! Can you share a bit about your lighting setup? Looks like you have two speedlights?
