No one said you had to do all of it. ;-)

There is a nice pool at the motel.

That's why we set up time when we get back to rest so that we can go back to work without collapsing.

I'm hoping that Artifacts and Louddog will give us some more of their great shot locations.

It is a long shot but here is a suggestion for Plan B...

There are 20 permits per day allowed into that area but only 10 are reserved. The other 10 are given to folks that come into the BLM office the day before and ask for one. I believe they are given on a first come first served basis. It is possible you could get a permit that way. Sometimes there are cancellations as well that you can find out about. That might be worth a shot.

Antelope Canyon and the Page area,

It is about 20 miles further south of Horseshoe Bend but another place I'd recommend photography is Navajo Bridge. It goes over a beautiful, narrow 700 foot deep canyon on the Colorado River. On that bridge is where I captured this very, very rare close-up of a California Condor:

Antelope Canyon is best photographed between 10am and 2pm. That is when the most sunlight filters down to the bottom and you get the best lighting. A tripod is a must.

Also, there are two separate places to go at Antelope. The most famous is Upper Antelope Canyon. The lesser known is Lower Antelope Canyon. You get to both from the same parking lot. There is a fee. It is on Navajo Nation land and you must go on a paid tour led by Navajo guides. Last time I was there it was $15, probably more now.

I'm being a nit picker here again but "The Wave", Coyote Hills, the Paria Wilderness and Buckskin Gulch are all in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument which is on the Arizona side of the border, not The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument on the Utah side.

The Grand Staircase-Escalante is a huge, largely unadvertised and unknown expanse in Utah's red rock country. I believe it is larger than all the others combined.

Thanks for the nitpik. I was quoting the distances from another site. The Rimrocks are in Grand Escalante Staircase if I remember right, while the others are in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. Both spots would work well in one day's trip.

This is a good article on shooting in Antelope Canyon.

Lower Antelope Canyon looks like it will be fantastic.

I was really taken with Upper Antelope Canyon. It's amazing!

Correct on The Rimrocks... Vermillion Cliffs and The Grand-Staircase-Escalante are next to each other, Vermillion Cliffs is on the Arizona side and The Grand Staircase-Escalante on the Utah side.

Both national monuments are administered by the BLM rather than the National Park Service and are part of the National Land Conservation System whose primary purpose is preserving natural environments and areas of historic or scientific importance. Both are very new national monuments. The Grand Staircase-Escalante NM was created in 1996 and Vermilion Cliffs NM in 1999 by presidential proclamation under the Clinton administration.

Note:
The article on photographing Antelope Canyon is very good with a lot of great advice. A few comments... I'd recommend not using a travel service out of Page, just drive directly to the parking lots for access to either Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon(they are close together). All tours are conducted by Navajo guides whether you book a tour in Page or not, so it is cheaper just to drive there yourself. Just tourists book out of Page. And, YES, you will want the longer 2 hour "photographer's" tour. Also, you can substitute the term ISO for ASA wherever you read it. Digital newcomers to photography have probably never heard of the term ASA which comes from film photography.

Steve have you ever been to Yellow Rock or The Box up Cottonwood Canyon Rd? Looks like it holds good potential but I'm not 100% sure of the location.

I have not been there and it sounds great! It is a primary photographic goal of mine to explore and capture the full extent of The Grand Staircase-Escalante and that is on my list.

Oh, I don't think it will be hard to find. Cottonwood is one of about three roads going north off highway 89 between Kanab and Page. I think it is the 2nd left out of Kanab. LOL!!!

I would be interested in doing this hike with you as part of my comprehensive Grand Staircase-Escalante NM photography project that I am trying to organize through the BLM in Kanab.

I'd also be willing to play guide for a group interested in photographing "The Rimrocks". I need all new pictures from there for my project anyway. LOL!!! And there is another set of cool hoodoos on the dirt road east of Big Water that I plan to photograph as well.

Not getting the permits to the Wave is only going to be a minor set back, we still have a lifetime of places to explore!

We'll still try for the daily drawing of 10 permits, PLUS, I have 6 permits for the other side of Coyote Butte which has some terrific views too.

Steve, I really appreciate your offer to act as guide for a bit. Wouldn't it be fantastic to find a new place that rivals all that's out there?

I think you were right the first time... these are the Wahweap Hoodoos and are east of Big Water.

Btw... great picture!

More information and good directions to get there are found here:
Wahweap Hoodoos

I've never photographed these hoodoos and they are also on my list of places within the Grand Staircase-Escalante NM to capture in digital.

Very funny. LOL!!!

I will also have a GPS, but not to prevent becoming lost. All the pictures I take in the Grand Staircase-Escalante NM(GSENM) will have their GPS coordinates documented and merged with the photo files as XMP sidecar files. During my GSENM project I fully expect to photograph spectacular geology in remote, unknown or little known areas that have never been published before. I need to have those locations properly documented so others may relocate them later.

I had a long conference call with a BLM official in Kanab last Friday. She has been in Kanab 9 years and says there are places like "The Wave" in many areas within the Grand Staircase NM as well as areas due east of "The Wave" in the Coyote Hills of the Vermilion Cliffs. She said just keep hiking east of "The Wave" and you can find other places like it. There are no trails or signs pointing to any of these locations... you just walk and discover them. She seemed amused at all the attention "The Wave" gets over other places like it.

The area where Becky has the permit for Coyote Buttes South is spectacular as well, also the Teepees are close by. I'm sure we could get carried away and spend the full day.

Here are some pictures of the permit area and the White Pocket area just outside the permit area. //www.phschuler.com/usa2006/COYOTE%20BUTTES%20SOUTH/index.html

I am blown away.

It seems we'll need 4 wheel drive vehicles because of the sand. Do any of you have 4x4 vehicles that we can take into that area on Monday, June 15th? We'll have 6 permits and possible can get more.
