You noticed. It's got a huge reduction at B&H, and should be here on Tuesday. It took alot of change to make me move. ;-)

The sale at B&H was to much to pass up for me as well, plus the 700 takes the same battery as the 200, and at 12.1 MP the file size isn't going to kill me in new storage space. Wait until you see your 24 -70 on a full frame, it's like having a new lens.

I even got the battery grip. I'm soooooo excited, but I'm trying to keep calm. Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday.

Woohoo! Everybody's gettin' new cameras. Doin' your part to stimulate the economy. Let the good times roll!

I know... I need to start divesting myself of equipment. I have an original 5D and two 20D's all with grips for sale. Any takers?

I'm interested... the drive wouldn't be too bad for me, coming from Denver, and I may still have, uh, "free time" if things keep up like they are. I haven't had a vacay in a looooong time!

Wahoo, we'll put you on the list. Another female to balance out these guys, and you've got a great name.

Rebecca,

The reservation info is in the 1st post. You'll want to make reservations if you're planning on the motel route, as you can back out without cost later, but can't get reservations later.

I'm looking at my options.

It's time for our next step on the 4th Annual Red Rock GTG. We'd love to get permits to go to the Coyote Buttes area and hike to the Wave as part of our GTG. It does take permits which are hard to get. Now is the time to apply for the permits. So, I'VE pm'd each person to apply for permits BEFORE THE END OF FEBRUARY. It will cost $5 for the application. There are only 10 permits available per day, and many have already applied, so the odds are not great.

To apply, go to: https://www.blm.gov/az/paria/lotteryapply.cfm?areaid=2&CFID=81239&CFTOKEN=63736200&jsessionid=903087678bcd1b627e12TR
If the site won't come up, change a security setting on your net by going to Tools - Internet Options - Advanced tab - & scroll to the bottom to check Use TLS 1.0 , hit enter and then try again.

Once on the application site, make 3 choices of dates, making sure to use the dates you'll be there. We anticipate arriving on June 11th and leaving on the 16th. Then fill out the rest of the application.

After that, we wait until we hear back. Hopefully some of us will get permits.

Take care, and PM me back to let me know when you apply for the permit.

Becky

Would it be better to have people try and spread the dates out for the permits? That way everyone here isn't competing for the same day?

Good idea Trent, this is what I applied for...

Your Lottery Application for Coyote Buttes North for 6 people was accepted.
The dates you selected are as follows:
First requested date: Monday June 15, 2009 Second requested date: Sunday June 14, 2009 Third requested date: Saturday June 13, 2009

The lottery will run on Sunday March 1, 2009. You will be notified by email of the status of your permit request on or around that date.

It it is somehow possible, I'd love to go. I've got a brother in Tulsa nearby. It's too early to make a commitment, but I'll check airfare prices. You do some nice portraiture and amazing landscapes, too, Becky.

John justamistere,

We'd love to have you join up. I'll put you in the interested category. Put in for your permit to the Wave, even if you aren't sure of being able to come. It's only $5. The applications for the lottery must be in by the end of February.

Thanks for the compliments. There are some amazing places to photograph.
Becky

treimee, You'll want to apply for the days you know you'll be there.

It's a 3 mile hike into the Wave, which took about 30-45 minutes to drive to the trail head and another 1 - 1&1/2 hour hike with pictures on the way. The best shooting is between 10 AM and 2 PM when the shadows are off the rocks (I know - it's opposite of most places). There is much more to see if you have the time, energy and endurance to explore. So, you'll want to have almost a full day to use. A couple of the people we were with had a late afternoon flight out of Las Vegas and still were able to use the permit in the morning.

It's Tuesday Becky!

I know - but I was thinking the 11th was Tuesday, so now I have to wait one more day. Pins and needles, yes, I am on pins and needles.
02/10/2009 11:22:17 AM · #72
It's worth the wait! Tomorrow will be here soon enough.

Please add me to the "interested" list. I may be one of those folks that just happens to show up sorta unexpected and sleeps in the car if there is no room at the inn. LOL!!

I am planning major photo safaris to The Grand Staircase-Escalante and may be in the area at the same time as you guys and it would be neat to meet up and swap photo stories and take a few pictures together. The week prior to that I will be at the John Day Fossil Beds in Oregon meeting up with a different group and might just keep on driving. :)

Well, it's not looking good for me this year... I'm hopeful that I'll have a job by then, but without guarantees I just can't justify the expense. It might have been another story if there were Couchsurfers at a reasonable distance from Kanab (closest are in Hurricane or Colorado City, roughly an hour away, which makes keeping up with the group difficult) or a hostel (there MIGHT be one, and it would be $15/night, but I can't find any solid info about it which makes me wonder if it's actually there), and I can't realistically afford $60/night plus gas right now. I would camp, but I have no equipment and all the local campgrounds appear to be RV only.

Ah well, I pulled out all my best Scroogy tricks, Kanab just looks to be too small for them to work.

For those interested in a less pricey option, I talked with Crazy Horse Camppark, @ 625 E. 300 S., Kanab, (435) 644-2782. They have RV, but also have tent sites for $16/night + tax. That includes the shower, etc. and wireless internet. Of course, you would need a tent, or similar.
