I do have a question of all of you. Are you okay staying in Kanab and making a side trip to Antelope Canyon and the Page area, or would you like to spend some of the time in Page?

No problem, I'll hold off booking the flight for a bit. If I had a preference I would like to headquarters out of one spot and Kanab it's a bad spot for that.

Where do you suggest?

Kanab is great for Zions, Grand Escalante (Paria & the Wave),possibly Grand Canyon, while Page is great for Antelope Canyon, Lake Powell, some slot canyons.

I said I thought Kanab wasn't a bad spot, it's close enough to everything and besides there isn't really many choices. Page gets to be a bit of a drive coming back to SLC. I think Kanab is fine.

Sorry, missed the "not". I'll ckeck into inexpensive lodging in Kanab.

I'll go on the interested list. Already have May 28th through June 16th blocked out for vacation, and was taking the boy camping/hiking the weekend before in SE UT....may need to stretch it out a few more days.

Ive checked out a number of lodging places in Kanab. The chain hotels are charging $89/night (AAA rates). The smaller places are $20-30/night less. They are older, less fancy, yet clean and full of character. Most are closed for the season and aren't taking calls now, so email is the only way to get info.

So far, these places are looking decent, yet inexpensive:
Teasure Trail Inn at $50-60 for a single (full/queen/king),
Aikens Lodge at $60-73/night for full/queen,
and Parry Lodge at $69/73 for 1 bed 1/2 people and $79/84 2 beds 1/2 people. (if we book 10 rooms at the same time, we can get $55/night)

Kanab Mission Innis said to have very good rates, but thin walls. Is that an issue? They are booked for June 11-13.
I'm trying to find a place with wireless internet access included.

I have a friend that stays at the Treasure Trail and gives it a "good enough" rating. It's on the main drag and is a good price, they also have the wireless your looking for Becky.

I've got an e-mail in to them and should hear back today.

The Rodeway Inn has offered 10 rooms for $66/night each instead of the usual $100. They offer wireless internet & full breakfast.

I'm still working on the lodging. I've got a place seeking group bids and I'm getting some decent prices for the major players, but I'm still working the less expensive direction, too.

I found a fantastic site for showing the possible locations we may want to try. Take a look here for some great information and wonderful pictures of the area. The Wave is in Coyote Butte North (which requires the hard to get permit), but Coyote Butte South and some of the other sections of Coyote Butte looks awesome too. At the bottom of this page, there are some links to some slot canyons we might like to visit and some more hoodoos.

I love researching the area and seeing what's available.

After researching, I'm working with the Treasure Trail Motel to hold about 10 rooms. The rates run from $54-70 depending on the size & number of bed, plus the number of people staying in the room. You can make that choice. They have a 10% off if you have AAA.

I'll send you a PM if you've indicated interest when the details are worked out. You'll need to make your own reservations, but nothing is charged until we stay there, and you can cancel up to 48 hours before.

Obviously, there are more than 10 of us who have indicated interest, so if you suspect you'll be attending, make the reservations. That way, we can get the rooms we need.

Becky

Anyone is always welcome to find their own accomodations. We have found that without careful coordination, people that aren't staying at the same place get left out. These groups tend to be headstrong, independent and flexible (imagine that!) and change the schedule with their change of mind. It's great and meets the needs of those attending, but is really hard to communicate to those off site.

It's official! We have 10 rooms held for us at the Treasure Trail Motel in Kanab, Utah from June 11 through June 16, 2009.

Now, it's time to make your reservations. Use the Treasure Trail Motel reservation web page to make your reservation. You can cancel up to 48 hours before your reservation without any charge. You'll need to give them a card number to hold the room, but no charges will be made until you arrive.

They do fill up in June, but it's early enough to have plenty of space right now.

When you make your reservation, put that you are with the DPChallenge Redrock Get Together (Becky Tesch). The rate chart in the link is current. If you have AAA, there's a 10% discount.

Have fun.
Becky

If the above is true, please remove me from the list.

Alan,

If you want to stay somewhere else, or camp, it's not a big deal. It will just be up to you to keep connected to the group and keep the communication going.

I've seen it go both ways. One guy stayed at the opposite end of town and stayed included in every activity we did. Another stayed at a different place and only joined up with the group once (but was having some health issues).

If you make sure that you let people in the group know you want to be included, and have a way to keep connected, you can easily do so. Sorry to make it sound like there were no other options but to stay at the same place as the group. It just adds a bit of challenge.
