For those of you who have less than stellar results at getting stuff posted at 1x.com, post your rejects here! My personal goal is 40 rejections by year's end, which is harder than it sounds and I may in fact have to revise that. Not that I expect any to get accepted to ruin that goal, but I'm kinda in the one-a-week upload-slot club (or will be here very shortly) and I do plan to only submit those shots with which I'm truly pleased.

My most recent rejection:

The version as submitted - made it to the 50/50 point in screening but didn't quite slip through. "Lacks impact" was the primary reason. No amount of improving via editing will change that one.

The actual edits of one I tried twice:

And my DPC portfolio versions of a couple of others:

There were a few more than these that got the "nay" vote as well.

The stuff at 1x is very good, very polished, very rich - even moreso than here. I'd love to be able to get the tones, the depth that some of the work there has, but have yet to figure out how.

Anyway, show us your rejects! :-) (Might as well do something with them, right?)

I got my first/only 3 in a row rejected....

WAS dejected, but now I see that I am Mighty Company :-)

Wow, I was thinking of trying to submit some of mine to 1x but now I am truly afraid.

That's a pretty interesting site. I do love the artsy flavor.

Do you want us to submit just the rejects here? I have one picked out to submit. Is it a race to 40 then? hehe

Yep, you can only post here after they've been rejected. If you get any accepted, they're posted there and you can provide a link. I have one (1)! Woo hoo!!!! It's my Couple in the Rain shot.

For those who haven't played there, if you're a mere mortal it's VERY tough to get stuff accepted there. Several dpc'ers have had very good success though. You'll see a lot from ursula, jdannels, lovethelight, jutilda just to name a few.

Great site, Deb! Thanks for the post. I can't wait to get some time to browse there.

I think 1x is like any other site. No better no worse. They have good stuff, but they also have a total niche of expectations that you must meet or be rejected. The process, also, seem arbitrary. You can be rejected instantly from a screener, but you could wind up with any of a handful of screeners. I wouldn't feel bad about being rejected, although I'd think Melethia's stuff would be up their alley. 75% of their published works are B&W or monotone.

Don't think your stuff isn't "quality" because you get rejected there. It's just not their style.

I'm sitting with 1 published and 5 rejected works. Two of the works have been rejected with one word, "Impact". What's up with that?

Such is the nature of niche photography websites. It's more a 'club' than anything else, and doesn't really matter in the large scheme of photography, the world, or life. Have fun with it if you like, but don't take it seriously in any way or you could be in for a long haul of disappointment. Personally, I don't like the fact that it has the potential to make people feel really bad about themselves, with no real guidelines to go by, simply to satisfy whatever whim the screener(s) you get feel like having at that particular time.

I don't much care for that kind of sense of false pride (as I see it), but if you are just having fun with it, all the power to you.

Deb...here is one of my MANY rejects for 1x:

To my complete shock, DPC voters appreciated this photo far more than I ever imagined possible and I have to say it's the one photo I'm the most grateful for in my entire portfolio. However, 1x tanked it entirely, (but I say that with a sheepish smile)! Oh well!

I have 4 photos which squeaked through the acceptance process at 1x and many many rejected photos.

I have to say that I'm happy to see Ursula has flourished at 1x. I always want to see such a talented photographer happy!

Should have done it in B&W... :) You'd be in like Flynn.

Ok...I just signed up and submitted my first shot...we shall see.

Thanks for sharing the site Deb...never heard of it and there is some beautiful work there.

1 of 2 rejects. I guess I didn't upload the other one here.

Great site. I don't see it as a niche site really unless by 'niche' one means 'won't blindly publish anything that comes along'. Does have a certain look that tends to get published more often than not, but there is a wide variety of work on display and all of it is top notch.

Accepted

Rejected

One other rejection but I can't post it because it goes into voting tonight for Best of 2008 ;-)

She gets rejections, too! (Just not at the rate of some of the rest of us.) :-)

I wouldn't go as far to say all of it is top notch, but much of it is very good.

My only complaint so far is that the majority of what gets published is very dark and moody, almost to the point of depressing. Those types of images can certainly be compelling, but it isn't the only criteria for exceptional photography.

There are some exceptions, of course. But overall it seems to be an overriding theme of 1x to me.

In large part that's true. But there are also some of the best landscape shots I've seen online posted there. I agree that it's relatively easy to come up with a dark/moody shot versus nailing an excellent landscape, and the former tends to get an inordinate amount of acceptance as 'fine art' simply because it evokes an emotional response. The 'impact' rejection should be applied more freely than it already is, if by 'impact' one means 'i have seen a variation of this shot 7,589 times now and it moves me as much as the salad i had for lunch'.

My next submission will be a landscape, but it's a dark and moody one, so I feel pretty good about it! ;-)

I guess you could say the same for my one submission that did get published.

Ursula would disagree with you. She considers it a "niche site".

Do you actually have to be rejected to join this here rejection club?

I don't even have anything to try to get rejected!
