Ansel Adams

Looking forward to the images on this one... A lot of people are quite accomplished at landscape photography on DPC, should be interesting to see their work in BW.

Ansel Adams portfolio did not just contain landscapes , google him and see.

True, he also did some colour work, but is most well known for his B&W landscapes.

And that's what the voters will be looking for! :)

I just looked at this book on him in my photography class and it had photos of things such as landscape (large mountains and rocks), portraits, and even things like small flowers and trees.

This is a VERY wide open challenge... Now the next thing is trying to figure out what the voters see that best represents Ansel Adams. Any suggestions?

You are quite right, but I guess most people associate him with big imposing landscapes.

Very true. I reckon I will take a closer look at his non-landscape work as I don't think I particularly have a knack for it.

Good for pointing that out though as a reminder.

Yes, most people associate him with big landscaping... But I would not be wrong if I post an image of a small flower... But would everyone who is voting vote down on mine for not meeting the challenge? I don't have the big landscape here in Lake Worth Florida. Nor do I have cacti (which is something he takes a lot of photos of). I think I will skip this one and go for the other challenge...

In the first Ansel Adams challenge I took 6th with this one:

All the rest of the top 30 were landscapes, except 13th was a harbor/skyline 'scape, 14th had beached fishing boats as a subject, and 27th was a nice detail of an old adobe (?) wall. There was an actual Ansel image entered, of an adobe church in New Mexico, and it also cracked the top 10. Bear in mind that the overwhelming majority of entries WERE landscapes, so it's not surprising most of the top finishers were as well. But there is some flexibility.

The real determining factor will be (or ought to be) a very high level of skill in powerful, tonally-rich B/W processing, which is the true mark of Ansel Adams.

Ansel, for most of his life, paid the bills as a working commercial photographer. He also did a lot of documentary work for the WPA. So there's a whole LOT of Ansel Adams images out there that he himself did not consider to be a real part of his "body of work", his artistic efforts, the sort of image he was so famous for.

In the late 70's my former boss went to an Adams showing in LA. He said they were selling 8x10's for about $20 or so (he couldn't remember the exact price but remembers them being dirt cheap). His wife told him; "You aren't seriously going to buy any of those, are you." He grumbled and put back the three prints he had chosen. To this day he says two things "I could've retired on what those prints sell for now" and "I am glad I divorced that b****"

Last Ansel challenge someone posted a real Ansel and it originally placed 11th. I think it would have done better except for the processing, the sky is kind of pixelated. Of course, they were DQ'd but I think was a good example of the competition quality of DPC's shooters. And, I love the DQ message :)

"Disqualification Message:
Entry must be taken with a digital camera. Photo must be taken within the challenge dates. Photographer is dead. Dead people can't submit to challenges. Please review the challenge submission rules.

If I remember correctly, either Langdon or the SC submitted the entry to see how it would do.

That's about right. When I was living in Carmel Ansel GAVE my girlfriend and I a signed, framed 20x24 of "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico", which was at the time selling (framed) for around $75... She kept it when we split up, over my strenuous objections, sigh...

That's right. I was actually the one that picked the image :-) Entering it was an idea I floated by Langdon and he agreed to it... I deliberately did not choose a landscape.

Yeah, I thought you were involved, but I didn't want to implicate you based on my shoddy memory :)

Ooh, I got a location idea that isn't too far away and luckily there isn't actually much snow (I think). Too bad I sorta fired prematurely with the Master's Challenge.

Ya, that would be a great one too! But he won a ribbon for it anyway so I'm sure he's happy.

Those two photos were the first thing that came to mind when the Ansel Adams challenge was announced.

Both Adams challenges have occurred in the dead of winter (where I am) which kind of bums me out. My options are limited...

One of my shots from December's trip to Yosemite. Kinda looked like the one from //www.anseladams.com :)

As much as I'd love to drive to Yosemite for this one I think it's safe to say my entry will come from closer to home. I feel particularly challenged with BW and it will be cool to see the entries.
