As much as it pains me to say this, I need the help of a Nikon user :-)
I have a friend with a Nikon DSLR (not sure the model, think it's a D40). He's just starting to express interest in shooting RAW but seems to lack the ability to work with the NEF files. He's using a somewhat older version of PaintShop, which he claims has no updates that allow it to work with NEFs.
Canon includes their "Digital Photographer Professional" software with each camera, which is a (somewhat lame) image editor that lets users convert RAW files to TIFFs or JPEGs - is there a Nikon equivalent to DPP? I've looked at the offerings on the Nikon software page but am unsure which does what my friend needs.

there should be nxviewer which {i think} converts
you could also try //ufraw.sourceforge.net/

It should have come with Nikon View when he purchased it, which should be able to work with the NEF files. If not check Picasa or one of the other free ones to see if they will work

Not sure about the D40 but the D50 and D200 came with a program called Picture Project. It might be available for free download on Nikons website or somewhere else on the net.

I have used Picassa (free download from Google) and it opens the Nikon D40 RAW files. It has just basic editing capabilities. I recently got Paintshop Pro Photo X2 and it also handles the D40 NEF files (also tried NEF from my new D90 and both are fine there as well).
Nikon's software is Capture NX 2. It seems to be going for around $119-190 or so.
Corel has a free trial download at //www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Product/1208530085925#versionTabview=tab0&tabview=tab6 that is fully functional - not sure how long it lasts but probably 30 days. On the same page they have a 49.99 upgrade option (under the ULTIMATE) tab but your friend's may be too old. They say upgrades require Paint Shop Pro 7 or higher, or Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI or higher.
If you click on the STANDARD tab on that page you will see Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 avaiable for $69.99. It is the same download as the demo - basically you download the demo, if you like it you can then buy it and you get a registration key to unlock the demo. The program does offer a tremendous amount and has a very smooth interface. I am thinking that may be your friend's best avenue, but at elast they can give it a try without cost.

Irfanview is a wonderful, free image viewer/light editor that will handle this job and many more.

I've suggested this to him, as well as the NikonView that should have come with the camera - assuming he still has the disk.

| Nevermind the Picture Project, Nikon discontinued that program. Nikon View would be the way to go. |

AFAIK,Irfanview does not convert RAW images... it *will* display an image from a RAW file, but it is displaying the embedded JPEG. I'm not aware of any update to Irfanview that will let it truly convert RAW files, but I could be wrong. |

ViewNX is Nikons free viewing / converting software. It doesnt allow for much control in the conversion though.
If He is interested in shooting raw though, really, he should look into some software that allows you control over what your doing in raw conversion. Otherwise the camera itself will do a great job converting the raw files (it always reconrds these) to JPGs.
CaptureNX is nikons main editing / conversion software. It handles Nikon raw extremely well. The next item in that list is CaptureOne, they too handle Nikon data like a charm. Both cost money though.
Transfer NX is nikons free transfer utility. Its nice as well. I think ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) can be downloaded free as well, but not totally sure on that one.
Unless your going to utilize the benefits of shooting in raw ie. adjust exposure, change temp., etc., then he should just stick to jpeg for the time being. raw has a ton to offer, but its tough to get at it unless you have the software.

I am using Nikon Capture and Nikon Capture NX.
Nikon Capture for normal enhancement.
Nikon Capture NX for detail enhancement.
Thumbs up - highly recommend for Nikon beginner and intermediate photographers.
