Well I gave my new 1D Mark II a "workout" this afternoon. I went to a high school baseball game and shot 983 images (and 1 .WAV voice annotation). 8.5 frames per second is a blast! (I definitely noticed a few people looking my way when they heard what that sounded like.) And let me say, the shutter button is very sensitive; it is gonna take some getting used to to only take 1 shot when the drive mode is set to high speed! (Most of the time when I meant to only take a single shot I would get 2 or 3. The shutter button has a much different feel than the 10D.)

It was windy, very dusty, and it even rained for a bit. So my 1DM2 is now pretty acclimated to the kind of "stuff" it was designed for.

I went hoping to find a few parents who wanted some "action shots" of their son playing. I put together a sample collage and printed it as an 8x10 at Sam's Club to show around at the game:

All the shots in that collage were taken with my 10D, but I envision an 8 or 9 shot 1DM2 high-speed "action sequence" down the left or right side of a pitcher throwing, player at-bat, a slide in to home, etc...

I'm still shooting in JPEG mode with the new camera; don't know how I'd make it shooting RAW since I filled up two 1GB CF cards...

Maybe you can hire runners to jockey your cards to have them downloaded and processed like Sports Illustrated does. ;) BTW, congrats on the new hardware. Happy shooting.

Just for kicks, I put together a quick movie of a 22-shot 8.5 FPS sequence from the baseball game this evening. This sequence was shot handheld, with the 70-200/2.8L IS with the 1.4X TC, wide-open at f/4.0.

You'll need QuickTime to view it: Click Here

Remember, each frame is actually an 8.2 megapixel image which I downsized to 600x400. =]

When you consider the highest high-def resolution (1920x1080) is "only" 2 megapixels (and stuff at that resolution isn't even being broadcast), that is some serious resolution!

Considering you can almost buy a 1D Mark II body for the price of that CF card, I don't think I'll be getting one any time soon, as sweet as that would be!

I'm used to the 8fps on the Canon EOS 1D so I'm not going to find the change. But it is great to shoot at 8 or 8,5fps. Especially at sporting events. It makes all the difference. I'm selling my EOS 1D and buying the Mark II as soon as possible :) Congrats on yours.

Very nice Eddy! It's a stiff price to pay but still 'only' 6/10's of the price of the EOS-1DS... The 1DS is $9999 CDN here in Canada and the MKII a 'modest' $5899 CDN...(I'll have to ask my wife if I can take a second mortgage out!)

And on top of that is the cost of all the court side tickets to the basketball, baseball and hockey games so you can really take advantage of the potential of the camera!

Having said all this: I would love to get my hands on the MKII myself! I wonder if they take the 300D as a trade.... hmmmm...

I don't know if it's possible to live without 8.5 fps (and did I mention 8.5 mega pixels?) now that I know it exist! Why, oh but why did you have to educate me on this Eddy?!? My wife might come after you with the rolling pin... you could only hope we get a "conflicts revisited" challenge :)

My wife knows me too well - that once I start drooling, it's only the matter of time before it's in our house... in in my camera bag...

Sounds like a greast idea! I just check it out and this is what I will be getting next (assuming I don't get the MK II first...) :)

Reminds me of when I got my motordrive for my Nikon F3. I blew through a 36exp roll of chrome (and $15) in just over 6 sec. At least you don't have to stop and reload as often.

Holy expensive equipment batman!

Unlike love and golf, photography is something that can be improved by tossing money at it! :)

But never forget: Cameras don't take pictures, people do

Hey Eddy, congratz on the new camera! It is wonderful to see what the images actually look like. In regards for cards, well ebay has 2GB hitatchi for around 200 us dollars, (sometimes less sometimes more) but that would be a fairly cheep solution for a bit more pictures. That and a digital wallet (portable hard drive) to download while the next chip fills up you should be good to go. And I can only dream of the system :-)
