For the benefit of cheapskate non-members like me, how about an invite into a Member's Only Challenge for the top 3 non-member finishers in the Open Challenges?

For less than $0-50 a week you are invited to enter all Member Challenges.

Actually this is one of the perks we get for being paying members. Many of the paying might be angry to see this given away for free.

Plus you can sell your images and carry a side portfolio.....and there are extra forums to read through...sound worth it yet? Geez....what's $0-50 per week when you get so much more for your hobby?

And you can click that refresh button as much as you like.

A thousand bucks worth of camera gear, and you "can't" foot $25 for a year-long membership? I don't get it.

If you are not sure it's worth it, then try what I did. Do the $5 a month for a couple of months. Then decide of it is worth the $25 for a whole year.

I bit the bullet last March, and I think I improved at a faster rate than I would have w/ just the open challenges...

I seem to have hit a nerve here (or at least some kind of streak of evangelism!).

First of all I don't think I'll ever get to be in the top 3 non-member finishers anyway, so it doesn't directly apply to me. However, I was just thinking of a nice gesture to non-members who have done well to be invited to participate in the member's competition, for one week only. I know membership is cheap and excellent value for money, but I just thought it would be a nice gesture, and actually likely to encourage them to become members.

Incidentally, being able to hit the update button as often as I liked would be the least appealing feature of membership. At least at the moment I can only do it once an hour so I get some time off. I don't know how all you members cope!

There are a number of challenges throughout the year that are 'open' (non-member) challenges yet operate under the 'advanced' (member) rule set.

One BIG advantage of membership over registered that nobody has mentioned yet: Monthly Free Studies!

no.

I agree that if we let some people do a members only challenge and they are not a member, than *someone* is going to get offended.

FYI, if you want to be a member and cannot afford it, you can ask for a sponsor. I'm sure someone here would be nice enough to give you a yearly, or a least a month's worth of free membership for you.

7 cents a day does seem like a bargain for all of the fun I have here... not to mention my photography getting better as a side benefit.

All I have to do is give up one Coke every three and a half weeks and I've got DPC paid for for the year.

There's a lovely settable feature in Preferences to turn scores off. I highly recommend it. :-)

To be a black sheep, I actually kind of like this suggestion.

Maybe do the invites once or twice a year at random to give the registered users a taste of a member challenge. To do it all the time I think takes away from the incentive to buy a membership.

or as a gestured Christmas gift for that non member that has ribboned a blue.

Me too. Might set a fire under our smug, dues-paying butts. :P

Oh, and if you ribbon in that member challenge, you get to stay on another week. Might lead to some neat "King of the Hill" style infighting.

But that's not fair to us Members. Or is it? Bear with me here: the top-scoring Members get to be Site Council for a week!

You consider THAT to be a reward?! A reward would be for an SC member to get a week off from it while someone takes their place.

I always assumed that if someone were here participating in challenges, but was not a member, that it was really by choice of desires in life.

I mean don't we all have internet, nice cameras, electricity, and on and on... so the seven cents a day isn't really the issue, is it?? It's that they'd rather do something else with the $25. And that's how it should be.

Keep in mind that I'm not talking about folks who have paid their memberships in the past and are hit with temporary hard times... gift memberships cover that very generously here. But...

I think if I've PAID to do something I take it a bit more seriously... sort of like a teenaged boy doesn't tend to spin out his car on tires that he bought himself... but has a wild time on tires his Daddy bought for him.

Paying for a membership is sort of like a 'dare' to yourself. I dare me to buy a membership... because I know if I do, then I'll be more inclined to learn from the site and not waste the money I've invested in myself here on the forum.

We all make choices in life according to our priorities.

And that's how it should be.

I thought they were all Free Studies anyway. Some of the entries have nothing to do with the challenge descriptions. Plus there is no rule that says you have to adhere to the challenge description which in theory makes them all Free Studies IMO.
